Living in York, I recently went for an enjoyable weekend in Caernarvon with a friend. Unfortunately, the train journey through no fault of the TOCs concerned didn't quite run smoothly.

On Friday 30th September, we were booked on the 1157 First TransPennine Express from York to Manchester Piccadilly using an advance ticket that was booked through the East Coast website. Owing to earlier problems in the Huddersfield area (yet another cable theft?), the crew for our train was apparently in Manchester and as a result they had to cancel our train at York. We got on the next available service (the 1226); however this did mean that we missed our connection into the 1350 to Llandudno Junction. Again we got the next service one hour later and completed our journey.

This does raise two questions from me: 1) Can we able to reclaim some of our fare back through Delay Repay? 2) If so, which TOC should I reclaim it from?

Coming back on Sunday 2nd October, we were booked on the 1526 from Llandudno Junction to Manchester Oxford Road and our travel itinerary told us that we would have to go out to Salford Crescent from Oxford Road to then get to Manchester Victoria to get the 1805 to York. This gave us a 6-minute connection at Manchester Oxford Road, a 7-minute connection at Salford Crescent and an 8-minute connection at Manchester Victoria. (As an aside, I was surprised they didn't tell us to change at Newton-le-Willows; however that was probably owing to a lack of available seats before Victoria). Our train ended up arriving at Oxford Road 5 minutes late, which meant by the time we'd disembarked the train, our connection had left. As a result, we decided to dash across central Manchester to get to Victoria and made it with a couple of minutes to spare.

This raises one question from me. Would there be a claim for the connection being missed at Oxford Road even though we managed to get across central Manchester on our own accord or would that is seen as being cheeky?

I presume you would apply through TransPennine. The details can be found on their passenger charter (pages 17-19) here. Unlike other TOCs I don't think TPE have delay repay forms - but I could be wrong there.

If your ticket was stamped the coding could be used to identify which service you travelled on and claiming you missed the train when you were actually on it could be classed as a fraudulent claim.

Assuming the trains for this Sunday 9th are the same (they appear to be), you missed the 1738 from Oxford Road arriving at York 1941. Your next opportunity would have been the 1800 to Piccadilly and from there the 1821 arriving at York at 2004. Assuming both of these ran on time, the gap is only 23 minutes and therefore illegible for a claim anyway.

Personally, having got into Oxford Road late, I would have checked the next possible journey to York on my mobile and not made a dash across to Victoria. You missed your connection therefore your ticket would have been valid.

By all means claim for the outward journey.

From the TOC that caused the original delay, ie. TPE.

If your overall journey was not delayed then you have no cause for complaint under Delay Repay.

Of course you could have chosen to wait for the next service from Oxford Road. This would then entitle you to Depay Repay compensations if you arrived at the eventual destination of your journey late by 30 minutes or more.
