Also it gives London direct links with west Liverpool.
.

Is demand so high that the people living in the west of Liverpool desperately and urgently need a direct train to London from their nearest rail station because trekking to Lime Street is becoming a major problem?

You mean like Wrexham & Shropshire... whose three trains per day were sadly discontinued. Therefore, how an hourly service can possibly be justified is beyond me.

IIRC, one of the reasons for Wrexham and Shropshire's demise was the fact that there weren't enough services, which meant a fall in passenger numbers.

I actually had to look up Bidston on Google Maps. Bidston is so small, Google can zoom right in to street level and still fit in on one screen. It's not even the most significant settlement on the Wirral.

If you wanted to shift traffic away from Liverpool's Eastern approaches, why wouldn't you choose Birkinhead?

How much service would a summer London-Whitby train attract? It could run from Kings Cross and call at Stevenage, Doncaster, York, Northallerton, Middlesborough, Battersby, Lealholm, Glaisdale, Grosmont and Whitby.

I have thought that would be a good idea but why Stevenage and not Peterborough, Grantham, Newark and Retford and Middlesborough?

Whoops I forgot Middlesborough. I'll edit that. Also I might add a stop at Nunthorpe. It could be a Bi-mode IEP, in which case it would be 10-car, and divide at Middlesborough, and the other portion could go to Redcar Central, Redcar East and Saltburn.

Chester to Euston services could be re-routed to Gatwick & Brighton every 3/4 hours of the day calling at Watford Junction (for Euston Connection), Kensington Olimpia, Gatwick Airport & Brighton. This once again putting a direct service from the North to South London & Brighton. Some trains could even be slightly re-timed so the voyagers could go to/ Start at Manchester instead of Chester, whilst 47s would haul the re-timed Pendos to Chester.

How many people go from London to Whitby (might be worth running for the Whitby Goth Weekends and a couple of other event weekends). I've rarely seen people there who've come that far.

You'll hit the usual problems finding paths for it through Welwyn too.

The problem with alternating destinations is you'll finish up with stations like Winsford having departure times like 11:00, 11:30, 13:00 rather than 11:00, 12:00, 13:00.

Why would this be affected by running some trains to Preston ?
Unless the Preston trains go via Manchester, anything between Crewe and Preston still passes through Winsford, Hartford and Acton Bridge. The Liverpool line diverges from the WCML at Weaver Junction.

Selling loads of dirt cheap advance tickets probably didn't help their business plan much either. ;) Though to be fair, I probably wouldn't have used W&S as often as I did, as a lowly student at the time, if those advances hadn't been available!

They've got thunderbird 47s so don't see it being a problem.
57s, to split hairs, but given that Virgin have discontinued any regular Pendolino "drags" in passenger service due to the unreliability of the process, I see that re-introducing the practice could be a problem.

It's also worth noting that Virgin no longer lease their own class 57s, they hire them in from DRS for "thunderbird" duties.

As well as all the problems of service reliability brought about by operating over the long (and slow) single line to Whitby: Very easy for a comparatively small delay on the East Coast to cause the train to miss its' path on the Esk Valley line, and vice versa when starting from the Whitby end.

I am very much in favour of giving Middlesbrough a direct service to London as part of the East Coast franchise, but a through train to Whitby strikes me as a none starter. A more regular local service over the Esk Valley line, and better connections at Middlesbrough, would be a greater boon to the communities that it serves in my opinion.

I agree LM should serve Preston though, I thought there was a proposal a few years ago that involved sending the Trent Valley service to Liverpool and then diverting one of the Birmingham services to Preston.
This is the proposal I would support, rather than any more complex ideas about alternating destinations, and I would like to see it happen come the 2016 timetable recast. 1tph Birmingham - Liverpool, 1tph Birmingham - Preston and 1tph Euston - Crewe - Liverpool. Liverpool technically gets a second train per hour to London (albeit slower, but at least the LM Crewe services are 110mph and avoid Northampton now) without requiring any input from the seemingly recalcitrant or unwilling Virgin, and you also introduce a direct service between the potteries area, Stoke et al, and Liverpool. :)

Well that should be one east coast HST tied up for an entire day doing very little. I also wonder if any other train would be able to pass at any of the "loops" at Nunthorpe, Battersby or Glaisdale

It might also be fun getting off at some of those stations - they are tiny! I wonder what the journey time would be like from Northallerton to Whitby and back. Surely this is more suited to an excursion type of train than a service train!

Now, lets see if we can rustle up a driver with both route and traction knowledge ;)

Shame I am too young, I know the route perfectly and I know all there is to know about HSTs including how to drive one.

I rather suspect that you underestimate the required standard of rules, traction and route knowledge.

So basically Liverpool to Birmingham will lose one train an hour in favour for Preston to gain an extra train each hour to Brum? Why? Is passenger demand at Preston more higher than it is Liverpool for people who want to travel to Birmingham. I doubt this will happen seeing as the Liverpool to Brum trains are getting overcrowded at peak times so removing one train hourly they are just asking for trouble.

I very highly doubt that. Perhaps you'd like to give us some indications of what exactly you know?

Liverpool will be served by an extension of the Crewe-Euston Trent Valleys stoppers as a replacement, which does open up through journeys to Stoke and local stations thereafter, as pointed out above. Introducing the Preston service creates new journey opportunities from Hartford north to Warrington et al for the first time in many years; and also gives a second service per hour from Crewe to Warrington, Wigan and Preston, which I think is quite desperately needed. It will also give Stafford a regular service to Warrington / Lancashire for the first time in a very long while too. With a good connection at Crewe for any Liverpool passengers to / from the West Midlands on the half hour without the direct Liverpool-Birmingham I think it will be a very good move and open up a lot of new and for years neglected direct journey opportunities.

... Including the track layout of the entire route, the position of every platform stopping point, signal and crossover on the route, every station passed between Kings Cross and Whitby, the braking point for every station, mileages, the linespeed at every point in the journey, the gradient and the radio codes for communications with control centres & signal boxes? And I suspect this is only scraping the surface.

Then there's the traction knowledge including the coupling arrangements for emergency situations, traction and braking performance, performance in poor railhead conditions, the trains top speed, the bell/buzzer codes, the position of every component in the power car and the fuel range? And I suspect this is only scraping the surface.

Oh, and also the rules & regulations including arrangements for single line working, what to do in brakedown situations, how to set detonators, the alpha-phonetic alphabet for communications, the difference between trackside and lineside, the arrangements for train evacuations and much much more.

A slight underestimation of the extent of your knowledge perhaps?

NB. 1) I may have been a tad harsh with my response, but claims like ''I know the route perfectly ... and all there is to know about HSTs'' doesn't do you any favours whatsoever.
2) I don't know any of this either, before anyone says anything...

Well I don't really know how to drive on perfectly but I know where all the controls are and how to use them.

I think we actually need a new service from Kildonian to Buckenham, calling at Barry Links, Teeside airport, Elton and Orston, Coombe, Shipea Hill and Buckenham. To be run at half-hourly frequency with 8+2 HSTs, giving these much under-utilised stations the service they deserve.

What about the route knowledge then?
I know perfectly the ECML and on the way to Middlesborough. I then know the route from Middlesborough to Nunthorpe and Battersby to Whitby.

To what standard of knowledge? Could you, for example, tell us what route indications would be acceptable for a train booked to run south along the ECML from the signal at the south end of platform 3b* at Doncaster, or state the method of signalling between Glaisdale and Whitby? What's the speed over the Down Stamford to Down Slow connection at Helpston Junction? What would be the first indication of a wrong route (i.e. Stamford instead of Tallington) at the latter?

* - no idea what number it is, but I'm not claiming to be able to sign the route!

Damn it Tomnick, I was just about to ask the speed over Helpston! ;)

Instead I'll ask what the speed is for the DS at Essendine and what the turnout speed is for Ranskill UPL. Cheers.

Ok I don't know that. I do know the route though and I know if a wrong turn was taken.
