Ok I don't know that. I do know the route though and I know if a wrong turn was taken.

I think there's quite a lot more to it than that, from what I understand route learning takes a number of months, but if it was just that it'd take less than a day, and wouldn't have to take place in the real world ;)

It's a bit late by then!! Qwerty chap has got it in one. This is exactly why drivers' route knowledge is so comprehensive, along with rules and traction knowledge - and to suggest otherwise is, really, an insult to the driving grade.

Not a bad little quiz though ;) .

A new service could be a Gobowen-Porth-Y-Waen shuttle as the line is already in place as Oswestry is a really busy place. Also since Oswestry is a 2 track station the shuttle could run while a longer distance service could run from Aberystwyth to Oswestry and a Stratford-Upon-Avon to Oswestry. the one from Aberystwyth could call at Aberystwyth, Dovey Junction, Machynlleth, Newtown, Welshpool, Shrewsbury, Gobowen and Oswestry.

Ooh how about patricroft and eccles to Northampton. I'll borrow the Apt if you want. It's similar to a pendo. It leans. It's pendo's daddy too.

(This thread is a joy :D)

Maybe instead of that a Preston-Northampton service via Manchester Piccadilly. It could call at Preston, Wigan North Western, Patricroft, Eccles, Deansgate, Manchester Oxford Road, Manchester Piccadilly, Stockport, Cheadle Hulme, Macclesfield, Congleton, Stoke-On-Trent, Stafford, Penkridge, Wolverhampton, Smethwick Galton Bridge, Birmingham New Street, Birmingham International, Coventry, Rugby and Northampton.

Maybe a Doncaster to Crewe calling at Doncaster, Coinsbrough, Mexbrough, Swinton, Rotherham Central, Medowhall, Sheffield, Dronfield, Chesterfield, Belper, Duffield, Derby, Peartree, Tutbury and Hatton, Uttoxeter, Blythe Bridge, Longton, Stoke-On-Trent, Kidsgrove, Alsager and Crewe.

You don't help yourself, do you mate? :)

Nope. :D

Anyway maybe extend a few of the Oxford to Banbury to Coventry and the London Paddington-Banbury trains to Stratford Upon Avon.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
New service from Carlisle Citadel to Stirling calling at Lockerbie, Symington (Lanarkshire, re-opened) (alternating every 2 hours with bus link to Biggar), Carstairs (alternating every 2 hours with bus link to Lanark), Motherwell, Whifflet, Coatbridge Central, Cumbernauld, Larbert, and Stirling. This can be easily achieved by extending the present Motherwell - Cumbernauld service in both directions and be operated by electric trains when Cumbernauld - Stirling is wired.

Also a new service from Glasgow Central to Lincoln calling at Motherwell, Carlisle Citadel, Lancaster, Preston, Wigan North Western, Manchester Piccadilly, Stockport, Buxton, Bakewell, Matlock, Derby, Nottingham, Newark Castle, and Lincoln. Obviously, this would require the reinstatement of the track between Buxton and Matlock.

In peace

Some are serious, some are far-fetched suggestions and some are utter rubbish

Maybe a London Euston-Liverpool stopper and a London Euston-Manchester Airport/Manchester Piccadilly.
The one to Liverpool could call at London Euston, Watford, Junction, Milton Keynes Central, Rugby, Tamworth (alternate), Stafford, Crewe, Runcorn and Liverpool Lime Street.

The one to Manchester Piccadilly could call at London Euston, Watford Junction, Milton Keynes Central, Rugby, Tamworth (alternate services), Stafford, Crewe, Wilmslow, Manchester Airport, Heald Green and Manchester Piccadilly.

Alternatively it could be Dundee, Haymarket (to provide a quick service between Dundee and Edinburgh), Edinburgh Waverley, Newcastle, Durham, Darlington, York, Doncaster, Lincoln (reverse), Newark Castle, Nottingham, Leicester, St Pancras, Ebbsfleet International, Gravesend, Margate, Ramsgate, Dover Priory, Folkestone Central, Ashford International, Tonbridge, Redhill (reverse), Gatwick Airport, Chichester, Fareham, Havant, Southampton Central, Salisbury, Yeovil Junction, Axminster, Exeter St Davids (reverse), Newton Abbot, Totnes, Plymouth, Liskeard, Par, Truro, St Erth, and Penzance.
But you missed out my home station D:

I have a couple more. Maybe a Milton Keynes Central to Carmarthen via Northampton calling at Milton Keynes Central, Northampton, Rugby, Coventry, Birmingham International, Birmingham New Street (spilt), 1. Rowley Regis, Stourbridge Junction, Kidderminster, Droitwich spa, Worcester Foregate Street (connect), Malvern Link (alternate service), Great Malvern, Colwall (alternate services), Ledbury, Hereford, Abergavenny, Pontypool and New Inn (alternate services), Cwmbran (alternate services), Newport, Cardiff Central, Bridgend, Port Talbot Parkway, Neath, Swansea (reverse), Llanelli and Carmarthen.

Another could be a Liverpool Lime Street-Salisbury via Oxford. It could call at Liverpool Lime Street, Liverpool South Parkway (alternate services), Runcorn, Crewe, Stafford, Wolverhampton, Tame Bridge Parkway, Birmingham International, Coventry, Leamington Spa, Banbury, Oxford, Didcot Parkway (alternate services and reverse), Swindon, Chippenham, Trowbridge, Westbury and Salisbury.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Also another could be a South to North train from Dover Priory to Aberdeen. It could call at Dover Priory, Ashford International, Tonbridge, Redhill, Guildford, Reading, Oxford, Birmingham New Street, Derby, Sheffield, Wakefield Westgate, Leeds, York, Darlington, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Haymarket, Inverkeithing, Kirkcaldy, Leuchars, Dundee, Abroath, Stonehaven and Aberdeen. This could just be once daily in each direction.

Shame I am too young, I know the route perfectly and I know all there is to know about HSTs including how to drive one.

You know the route so well that you can drive it as well in freezing fog (where you cant see the rails in front of the train) as well as you can on a nice sunny afternoon can you?

People like you really wind me up! <D
You dont know the route, you have a rough idea where things are when you see them, in the real world when you see a station it is far too late to stop at it!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Well I don't really know how to drive on perfectly but I know where all the controls are and how to use them.

Priceless, absolutely priceless!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Never mind, it's all been swept under the carpet remarkably quietly...!

oh no it hasnt, I have just seen what the <deleted> is posting!

What an absolute <deleted> who hasnt got a <deleted> clue actually what he is <deleted> talking about!
I suppose he is one of those <deleted> that plays on trainsim* etc and can stop a train in a platform (but nowhere near the correct mark) using full service which in the real world would end up with you sat in front of your manager who will be asking why you are driving like a tw@!

* other games available!

I know perfectly the ECML and on the way to Middlesborough. I then know the route from Middlesborough to Nunthorpe and Battersby to Whitby.

List the whole route then including stations (with braking points for different traction types and weather conditions), signals (with routes available and indications needed), gradients, speeds, controlling signal boxes (listing areas covered, radio codes, contact numbers etc).
That will do for now, I will get back to you with the rest of the things needed to sign the route!

Ok I don't know that. I do know the route though and I know if a wrong turn was taken.

So you dont know the route at all then!
If you are wrong routed you should be able to stop before you get to the junction. there are exceptions where this is not possible but they are mainly high speed routes.

I'm quite impressed anyone can claim to have any route knowledge whatsoever when they have never been in the front of a train.

Id also be interested in the HST traction knowledge he seems to have. Id pay good money to watch him go to a job interview for a trainee driver and tell the DM all about his perfect route and traction knowledge!

What about something more useful like a Southeastern HS1 service that runs into London Fenchurch Street and also calls at West Ham and Barking?

But the Stratford International and St Pancras stops for Southeastern serve most of, if not all of, the connections avaliable from Barking and West Ham, bar the GOBLIN, so what would running to Fenchurch Street achieve? Fenchurch is already at capacity at peak times anyway, when (if at any time) such a service would be of use.

I agree many of the ideas are totally unviable, but the OP is young and has hopefully learnt a lesson. We will be keeping an eye on his posts for the time being anyway.

I think we should conclude the thread at this point, so I have closed it. As always, if anyone has anything significant to add*, feel free to contact us.

(Also a point on 'memes' or other images with text embedded in the image: in future, if you can please consider our blind members, and members who are reading the forum at workplaces where meme sites are blocked, by putting a caption by each image, that would be greatly appreciated, thanks :))

HS1 runs in parallel with the line via Dagenham Dock and there is a connection (which does not cross any HS1 paths) off HS1 there as HS1 goes underground.

It would provide a connection to the C2C network and the Distrct line and so speed up some journeys between Kent and Essex.

I suggested the idea for its novelty value.
