My idea for an Up Goods loop at Werrington

Mad idea time. Would there be any value in leaving in the current temporary Up Stamford in place after the works, repurposed as an Up Goods Loop (or even reversible up and down) to hold south bound freight waiting to cross into New England yard? Needs two more points and signals, but I would have thought would have great value in regulating freight.

There might have been value considering it when it was being designed a couple of years ago, and no doubt it was. But you don’t make changes like that this late in the day. Or if you do, you guarantee a cost and schedule overrun.

Quite understand too late now,. I was just struck by the limited locations for recessing a freight train between Leicester and Peterborough, clear of faster passenger trains.

The freights can be recessed at Peterborough, so there’s little point having another one a few miles up the road. In any event end to end running times for a freight are only a few minutes longer than passenger.

The freights can be recessed at Peterborough, so there’s little point having another one a few miles up the road. In any event end to end running times for a freight are only a few minutes longer than passenger.

The only thing that might be worth noting it is that would the loop be 775m long or less? Also before Platforms 6 and 7 were opened at Peterborough were there not two goods lines there and now there is only one?
