When OOC is closed the sleepers will be taking to Reading depot for servicing. It would make sense to have an electric loco doing the drag to and from the depot.

Then you would not need to have a diesel running at Paddington providing the train supply and pumping out fumes.

They seem to hire in a 57 on a regular basis so is there a suitable electric loco that could be used ?

Maybe a 92, but wouldn't it be a waste just to go to Reading?

The stock is currently worked to and from Paddington by a Class 57/6 in the GWR Sleeper Pool so why get something else. GWR have their own loco and, as pointed out, where would an Electric Loco come from. Possible cost of a hire, crew training.

I can see no point in GWR leasing an additional one off locomotive, which would come with a lack of flexibility, the requirement for additional crew training etc.

The whole Night Riviera operation will remain diesel-only for the foreseeable future, and indeed probably for the long term.

Not having diesel trains spewing exhaust gases in major stations is wonderful. But two daily sleeper trains is not the biggest problem at Paddington. Replacing the HSTs with Class 800/802 and electrifying the local trains will do more for the environment.

That being said, replacing the current diesels with Class 88s would be nice.
