My Class 68 nickname idea

So as we all know, every loco has a nickname, donut for 60's, skoda's for 90's etc.... And they have obviously come about because one person, somewhere, one one day said to a mate... That looks like a...... And so the name spreads over time and it sticks.

Well now we are in a world of technology where we could spread the news and the nickname quicker should the opportunity arise... And I think it has with the arrival of the class 68

I haven't heard a nickname for these yet so I'm going to propose they be known as the Kelly Brooke.

They are nice and curvy and at the end of the day I'd love to have a ride on her (the 68 and Kelly)

So when you next spot one, ther you have it, you don't See a 68 in the distance, you see a Kelly approaching.

Battleskips sounds good.

In comon with the old warships they are the highest powered diesel BO-BOs of their era ... and of course the early ones are named after warships. How can' really call them warships as we already have warships, okay i know theres only a couple or so left; so battleskips seems close.

Oh my lordz, you just do not understand do you? Applying a nickname means that you can know it - and others will not! You can then refer to whatever in your own cabalistic way and feel smug when no one knows what you are talking about:roll:

Helps avoid saying 68 when you mean 86.

I'd recognise a loco that looked like a shed, but I can't remember what it's class is. Likewise Skodas.

Sure we've been here before. I think it is only enthusiasts that insist on nicknames for engines/units, where as the people who have to work on them call them by their proper names.

For example 60's, 66's, 08's. NOT, Tugs, Sheds and Gronks.

A tug is what I have when the Mrs isn't happy with me.

A shed is what I keep my lawnmower in.

A gronk.......Er, I'll come back to you on that one.

I think i'll be calling the 68s what I personally have always called...... er, 68s!

As for Doughnuts and Skodas....... i'll call them what ive always called them.... 60s & 90s.

To be fair, I only really use their actual class no., though nicknames are always good for a laugh. (So far, the "shed" is the only funny nickname I've seen.)

I wouldn't even say it was funny, it just suits them, due to the basic design and roof profile.

A nickname has to come naturally or have a meaning..... if you have to sit there and think about it, then it'll never catch on.

The people who work with them are far more familiar with them.

Enthusiasts and mechanics know that the eighth generation Honda Civics have the codes FN and FK for the 3- and 5-door bodyshapes respectively, but to everyone else...

I agree, it's not for those with an innate understanding of model numbers and codes to declare an "official" nickname, but if an appropriate one gains popularity, it'll stick.

But at the end of the day its 'a 68' to me, but I agree nicknames are good for a laugh and a bit of a change from numbers all the time
