My birthday week

I am coming to you guys for a bit of advice here:

Me and my brother are going to do some more stations and he has booked the week before my birthday off (6th-12th March) so that we can go places

Now what we like to do is a north-south-east-west thing and we have got east and west covered

We are going to go to Peterborough and Ely for East and Gloucster and Cheltenham for the west part

Now we have agreed Newcastle on the 12th of March and he is deciding on somewhere secret for my birthday on the 14th but where can we go for the north and south part.

There are only two provisos:

1) Plenty of traffic
2) Must be cheap

Any suggestions?

BTW by north and south, I mean north and south of Birmingham and we have to be able to get there and back same day

The most obvious candidate for the north would surely be Crewe. Or, if you need to go further north, Carlisle.

For south, I would suggest Southampton, or maybe Toton or Redbridge for a better view of freight workings.

For North you could also check out York and Newcastle by travelling with Cross Country from Birmingham. As you're returning the same day you could probably get it to be reasonably cheap by splitting the journey into lots of day returns rather than one through ticket (assuming all the cheap advances are sold).

Also as a random sidebar your birthday is the day before mine!

York is already taken for and Newcastle is already taken for. Kinda need somewhere away from those, good ideas though

warrington would be a good shout up the WCML, living in rugeley i doubt crewe would offer to much different in terms of freight, mostly liners over the back, at least at warrington you have a bit of variety

as for south from rugeley i would be heading for didcot or newport, obviously if you want to push it you would make eastleigh, Didcot would be my preferance, decent amount of freight, plenty of HST workings, but nothing wrong with the others
