My best train journey was January 7th 2008 when we went from Peterborough to Aberdeen. It was my first rail trip to Scotland and I got loads of photos from the train and enjoyed crossing the Forth and Tay bridges and Border bridge at Berwick and the bridge at Newcastle.

The best thing about the journey was the price. It cost me £5 for a GNER special offer single to Aberdeen and the same on the return journey 3 days later.

Tirano (Italy) - Chur (Switzerland) on the RhB metre gauge line one sunny Saturday in September years ago.

Street running, followed by open air spiral, tremendous gradients but no rack, highest rail pass in Europe without a summit tunnel (Bernina), and then through the Albula tunnel and the splendid twists and turns of the line down the valley - viaducts, tunnels, galleries - the lot.

Oh and yes: real motor unit/loco and coaches!

Well worth doing if you have the chance.

Difficult to narrow it down to just one, but one of the best would be London Waterloo International to Marne-le-Vallee Chessy (aka Disneyland Paris) with 373213+214 and back (with 373209+210, the Da Vinci Code set at the time) in July 2006. Scoring the track out of Waterloo International, Nine Elms Flyover, Fawkenham Junction - CTRL and of course my first trip on an international 373 with new track in France score made for a fascinating journey. Travelling at 186mph was also quite fun!

Other journies that came to mind:

0640 Exeter St. Davids to London Paddington, 1700 London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads and 1930 return on 1st December 2007 with 43002+003 (the other two legs don't get a mention as they were not so enjoyable) for the thrash off the beasts.

2026 Aberdeen to Edinburgh Waverley on 9th December 2008 with 43357+43285 (new track scored, required 43357 for all-time and 285 as a MTU'd power car)

1422 Brighton to Birmingham New Street on 13th December 2008 (having got my last 377 for sight on the way down, required track on the 1422 and being on the last ever Voyager from Brighton. Some heavy delays encountered but still good)

0511 Abergavenny to London Paddington on 3rd January 2008 (for the major thrash up Llanvihangel with 43002)

Plenty of others come to mind but are mostly railtours (the three that came to mind being The Airean Raider of December 16th 2006, The Mersey Mancunian of January 24th 2009 and The Festive Settle and Carlisle Explorer of December 29th 2008, all for considerable amounts of required track and/or thrash off the locos).

Mine would be a morning 0706 First Scotrail service from Glasgow Queen Street to Inverness. On a Turbostar. OK, not exciting. But it had recently been snowing and the scenery was absolutely breathtaking, and the crew were first rate.

There's also a time I did Aberdeen-Edinburgh on an NXEC HST (SB depart at 14:48). Nice scenery, but it had two hellfire valentas (can't for the life of me remember which two, though :() and, again, the crew were fantastic. "Robot-man" was in charge, and he's a great guard!

Sounds absolutely devine that does.

For me I do not have a particular favourite journey in mind, although I do like travelling on early morning services (pre-rush hour) where you are guaranteed to get a seat and relax as the day unearths.

I can't decide on just one! I must have several :p

One that I've done a couple of times (and it's not just rail, but bear with me) is Hemel Hempstead to Bastia (Corsica). Leaving Hemel and heading into London, we then took the Eurostar (from Waterloo) to Paris, before racing across from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon for our connection to Marseille. Top deck first class (very cheap!) on a TGV Duplex gave a fantastic view of the changing scenery as we shot through France - 3 hours Paris-Marseille is pretty awesome! Arriving at Marseille St. Charles we got off and into the Mediterranean air - and this is something I love on TGVs down to the south. Having left a slightly muggy Paris, to board an air-conditioned train and, the next time you go outside, feel that you're on the Mediterranean coast is fantastic. We then proceeded to cross Marseille using their metro (very...erm...plastic) and boarded the beautiful SNCM Danielle Casanova (or, on other occasions, the equally splendid Napoleon Bonaparte)to sail across the Med from Marseille - Bastia overnight. As close to an epic journey as I've ever got!

I've done similar things from London - Antibes - the coast line from Marseille to Antibes has spectacular scenery, but of course you miss out on the boat crossing.

Slightly shorter, but still in France, Paris Gare de Lyon - Annecy is a brilliant journey too - being aboard an 18 coach TGV (in places you can see both ends of the train when you look out of the window) snaking through the Alps is pretty special. * On an even briefer note, and one I did at Christmas, Paris St. Lazare - Rouen Rive Droite is a great journey - for railways rather than the scenery here. We were hauled by one of those fantastic reverse-rake locos (a BB15000, I think?) in one direction and (I think) a BB16000 on the return, both times in Corail comfort. The line is very busy with freight, as it follows the Seine to Le Havre, the main port for Paris (along with Rouen, I think) and I saw several 66s!

France has much more variety than the UK locomotive-wise, which makes it generally a more interesting place to travel by train, I think.

In Britain, I enjoy travelling down to Plymouth on FGW - esp. when it goes via Bath & Bristol! But No. 1 has to be my trip on WSMR late last year - Marylebone to Shrewsbury. On the way we were right behind the '67' and could see it quite easily through the carriage-end-gangway-door (whatever it's called :)). The food in 1st class was fantastic too - best breakfast I've had on a train! The return was best of all though as we were following a late running special with 34067 Tangmere. At Bicester we were put onto the wrong line, where we operated for about 20 miles, I'd guess - most of which I spent at the window looking at the signals on the 'right' line as we tried to catch it up to overtake. As it happened, we didn't, but it was great fun! :D

* As an aside it was interesting to note that at Chambéry the TGV split in the station - nothing unusual in that, you might think, but actually it split with passengers on board and all the train doors open - with no warning! You can hardly see such things happening in the UK even with the most basic of trains - and this is France's flagship train, the like of which (on domestic services) we have nothing to compare with!

Geordie back from exile.
My best journey would probably be the simply amazing run from Paignton to Newcastle years ago (90's) on the 1434, or 1444 - can't remember, ex Paignton. The incoming train was running very late and arrived about 1450 with the country end HST PC shut down. After a quick turn around we left about 1510 with still only one PC working and totally expecting to arrive in Newcastle a lot later that the 2208, I think, timetabled arrival.
Trundling up to Exeter still about 25 down we were told this train would terminate at Exeter and we were to join the train which would be on P6. We arrived at P5 and true enough there was a fresh HST set waiting on P6 to continue the journey to Newcastle.
We left Exeter about 30 down and the driver was giving it some serious welly so to speak on the way north from Exeter.
We made up time all the way, about 25 down at Bristol, about 20 down into and 15 down out of Birmingham, 10 down at Sheffield and about 5 down at Durham. We actually arrived into Newcastle 2 or 3 minutes early.

Truly a fantastic run

Others:-
My first ever long trip. Newcastle - Penzance, direct on an HST, then overnight to Paddington then across to KX and back up to Newcastle.
Also Thurso to Penzance in 24 horus - 1200 ex Thurso - Inverness - Edinburgh - overnight to Plymouth (might have been Bristol) then Penzance arr about 1155.

So many trips, so many memories.....

I remember having a trip behind 55007 Pinza up to York in 1979.Always remember that and Pinza became my favourite deltic.Just basically for the traction I guess. Also had many trips to Derby behind 45/1's during the mid 70's.Happy days.

Like many of the others on here its impossible to pick one trip as I've been on many wonderful journeys.

One I loved was in October 73, my first trip from Aberdeen to Wick in Scotlands far north. The scenery especially beside the sea was wonderful. The main reason I enjoyed it was the 26 on the front, one of my favourite classes.I've also enjoyed other lines in Scotland like the line to Kyle of Lochailsh, mostly because of the scenery but also the thrash you got when you climb from Dingwall up to Garve.

In Germany I had lots of great trips along the Rhine from Bonn to Koblenz on class 103's, a very fast electric loco a bit like our 91's, and also Koblenz to Mainz. Also the bit out of Stuttgart to Munich. Happy days.

Not too sure about this one.

My first time over the Forth Bridge and my first journey in 1st class stand out. Also the first time I was on the KWVR was quite memorable. But I think the journey that just (just!) shades it is the journey fom Monte Carlo to Nice. You leave what is possible the most beautiful station in the world and plunge into a tunnel. When you emerge, the scenery (French Riviera) is outstanding. The ride wasn't particularly comfortable (on old carriages with no air conditioning) but the quality of where I was and who I was with made it the best ever.

Probably not a best journey, but a memorable one.

going from Ely to Ipswich summer 2004 on a 150 on the section between Ely and Bury (non stop)
Chucking it down with rain with thunder and lightning. 150's engine roaring away as we were rattling along at 75mph. Great fun

A great one was on a UK Railtour in Sept 2007 where we did the Freight lines of West Mids, it was great sunset as we passed Walsall, a great atmosphere.

Three 'journeys' stand out.

Brighton to Edinburgh - September 1996. I had been down to a University at Falmer (north east of Brighton) for an Open University Revision Weekend. Can't remember WHICH Uni, as there are 2 at Falmer, but it used to be Brighton Polytechnic. As it was scheduled to finish at 5.00 p.m. on the Sunday night, there was no chance of me getting to Kings Cross for the last train to Edinburgh, so I stayed an extra night and got the direct 0920 service. We went all over the place - Clapham Junction (where we DIDN'T stop - a major surprise), Kensington Olympia, a line parallel to the WCML near Willesden Junc, the slow line from Acton to Reading (what a pain!), the Moreton Ladder taken a speed, Leamington, Coventry, New Street, Wolverhampton (where a group of 3 late-teen trainspotters boarded - God, they were boring b#st#rds!), Crewe, Manchester (where they, mercifully, got off!), Preston then straight up the WCML to Edinburgh. The entire journey was a 47 with a rake of Mk2s. To most people, it's not much of a journey, but it was (still is) my longest single train journey, and (in terms of WHERE the train went) it filled a lot of holes in my knowledge of train routes.
Oh, and the weekend worked - I passed T322 with a Grade 1.

September 2007 - Interlaken to Jungfraujoch (Europes highest train station) and back. Berner Oberland Bahn (BOB) to Lauterbrunnen. Changed onto a Wengen Alpen Bahn (WAB) to Kleine Scheidigg, then changed onto the JungfrauJoch Bahn to JFJ Station. Slow, but spectacular! I recommend it to all of you, but with the proviso that you go via Grindelwald rather than Lauterbrunnen.

May 2008 - St. Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord and back 4 days later as part of my 20th Wedding anniversary. What struck me was the sheer smoothness of the Eurostar. It took just less than 30 minutes between leaving StP and entering the Cheriton tunnel portal (including a stop at Ebbsfleet) - phenomenal speed, AND you don't notice it. I timed the return journey in the tunnel - exactly 21 minutes.

I've done the Forth Bridge, but it doesn't compare to the above 3!
