http://www.metro.co.uk/news/847000-muslim-protesters-burn-poppy-at-silence-for-war-dead

'Around 30 protesters calling themselves Muslims Against Crusades chanted ‘British soldiers burn in hell’ as the nation marked the anniversary of Armistice Day.

As the clock struck 11am, the group, many with their faces covered with scarves, lit a model of a large poppy and shouted: ‘British troops are murderers.’

They also held banners which read ‘Islam will dominate’ and ‘Our dead are in paradise, your dead are in hell’, as they marched from near Hyde Park.

The group clashed briefly with police in Kensington, west London.

One officer was taken to hospital with a head injury and two men were arrested for public order offences and one for assaulting a police officer.

The situation threatened to boil over further when around 50 members of the right-wing English Defence League staged a counter protest and police battled to keep the two groups apart.

Politicians, relatives of soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Islamic groups condemned the protest. Christine Bonner, whose son Darren was killed by a landmine in Helmand province in 2007, expressed ‘disgust’.

‘There are people like myself that, at 11am today, were remembering the lives of our children, and then there are some people doing something so hurtful as that. It is atrocious,’ she said.

Labour MP Khalid Mahmood described the actions as ‘ridiculous and despicable’ and Conservative MP Patrick Mercer said the group had ‘scorned’ the sacrifices made by thousands of Muslim British soldiers.

The Muslim Council of Britain said: ‘While this handful of people claim to speak for Muslims, many more will join fellow Britons in remembering the sacrifice of our armed forces.’

This sort of thing really gets my goat, most British families have some sort direct or indirect connection to the military and my family is no exception.

For those of you who only believe a story if its from the Daily Mail heres the link

A bunch of losers with nothing helpful to say. What a pathetic strategy they take: attempting to end a war by insulting families of the fallen? That's really going to help their cause, isn't it?

Where's the facepalm emoticon?

I'm a pacifist with no family members who have been involved in any conflict in the last hundred years, I strongly oppose both the wars in Afghanistan and in Iraq, as well as thinking that our involvement in WW1 (which the day is originally designed as rememberance for) was objectionable and wrong, as were many of the things we did in WW2. I neither observe nor care about this 2 minute silence thing myself. Yet I still find doing something like that tasteless and despicable.

^^Pathetic seems like a good word choice, yes.

I am not questioning your right to be a pacifist, but in the light of what a German takeover of England would have meant (victory for the Germans?), surely it is still proper to observe the two minutes silence. It's not like war is a policy decision that the public have the option to choose, so I can understand voicing your opposition.

30 muslim protesters do not speak for the entire muslim population of Britain. While these morons were demonstrating in London, Muslim women were lying a wreath of poppys at the Staffordshire arboretum. Ive seen many muslims also proudly wearing poppys. Not to mention the asian taxi driver who brought me home last night, whos taxi grill wore one.

May i also remind those British people declaring war on all muslims of LC Hashmi. A british muslim serving in the british army who was killed in a taliban attack while on duty in Afghanistan...one of many who serve in our armed forces.

Put in perspective, these idiots who do these things in the name of Islam are not true muslims, and as such insult every decent muslim in this country and abroad.

I will not tarnish all those of the islamic faith simply for the sake of 30 pillocks with nothing better to do than incite hatred.

A very sensible post there. The protesters clearly crave publicity, and will do these sort of things to gain publicity, make a name for themselves and to provoke even more hatred. They seem to have been pretty successful too, judging by some of the headlines, media reports and comments I've seen.

The fact they are Muslim has nothing to do with this. These guys are just pathetic, an excellent way to hand support to the BNP scum.

I understand the need for free speech BUT surely the powers to be should not have let the protest go ahead especially as it would so obviously upset people and certainly wind up other groups ie the English Defence League.

This protest should be treated as a arrestable offence under the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 - Stirring Up Religious Hatred:

This Act received Royal Assent on 16 February 2006, and came into force on 1 October 2007. It creates new offences of stirring up religious hatred, which are significantly different from the race hate offences contained within Part III of the Public Order Act 1986 (above).

The offence is committed if a person uses threatening words or behaviour, or displays any written material, which is threatening, if he intends thereby to stir up religious hatred. Threatening is the operative word, not abusive or insulting. Possession, publication or distribution of inflammatory material is also an offence. The offence can be committed in a public or private place, but not within a dwelling, unless the offending words and behaviour were heard outside the dwelling, and were intended to be heard. The defendant must intend to stir up religious hatred; recklessness is not enough.

So using abusive or insulting behaviour intended to stir up religious hatred does not constitute an offence, nor does using threatening words likely to stir up religious hatred.

There is a freedom of expression defence contained in section 29J which confirms that nothing in the Act "...prohibits or restricts discussion, criticism, or expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule, insult, or abuse of particular religions, or the beliefs or practices of its adherents."

So it is more difficult to prosecute for inciting religious hatred as opposed to racial hatred (for which the standard is already properly high).

Prosecutions for this offence require the consent of the Attorney General and are dealt with under the same arrangements as offences of inciting racial hatred.

And as to their absurd claims, well I believe the same could be said of Al Qaeda as they are murderers as they don't discriminate between innocents.

Now note I've actually done some research to back up my view of Al Qaeda:

It is not quite the same, but rather a lot of fans at Celtic park had a banner that claimed that they would have 'no bloostained(sic) poppy on our hoops' not to mention that deeds in Ireland, Iraq, and Afghanistan would 'shame the devils in hell'. I cannot link to a picture as i'm on my phone, but it is easily found. They disrupt 2minute silences every year too.

Why has my post been deleted when all I did is state a fact??
generalvegitible made some unacceptable comments, that were deleted by another moderator. All references to his comments were also deleted. Pleasingly, no-one who replied supported the unacceptable comments, and there was nothing wrong with any of the replies whatsoever, however it doesn't make sense to delete a comment and leave all the replies.

If you have any further questions for moderators/admins please send us a PM (just sending to one of us will be fine as we can ask the relevant person) otherwise the question may go unanswered.

Also can I remind everyone that posts can be reported using this icon

if you see anything unacceptable.

Not all topics/posts are read by a moderator, so in some cases if no-one reports it, it may not be dealt with.

Can I just ask, why aren't they 'true muslims'? I'm not pro or anti Islam specifically, but I would like to hear that explained. I could speculate, but I'd rather not second guess you.

Of course, and i am happy to explain what i meant. However i only speak for myself on this...no one else.

I believe Islam to be a peaceful religion. Many muslims ive spoken to about the topic (i work in a hospital with Iranians, pakistanis, and a whole host of other religions and faiths) they tell me that extremism is simply used in Islams name, that infact it is frowned upon and is seen as an insult to the islamic faith.

There are i believe over 2.5 million muslims living in Britain, who go about there lives in peace and quiet.

I was mearly making the point that if extremism was a part of the islamic faith then extremism would be rife in this country and not just down to 30 people who thought they would try and make a point by burning poppys.

A consultant i work with a Mr Mohammed is from northern Pakistan, he told me two days ago that he considers anyone who uses fear, violence, and intimidation in the name of Allah a serious disrespect, a "true" muslim would never disrespect his own faith.

And what would be so bad about if the germans had taken over Britain during WW1?

Of course, WW2 is a bit different, and is the only war in history which has a good case for justifying it. But that doesnt justify some of the actions we took during the war (eg. Dresden)

That defeatest attitude is not british, you should be proud of your country, with all the chavs, football hooligans, crappy weather, lack of manufacturing, the UK slowly turning into America etc etc

I doubt anyone who has posted on this thread is truly British. What qualifies you to decide what is a "British" attitude? Why should he be proud of a country that has spent the last 7 years fighting an illegal war?

With regards to the topic, kernowfen, I agree with you totally.

Let's remember, christianity and the Bible aren't exactly squeaky clean.

I am English not British and no one can tell me otherwise.

And it doesn't matter what gets burned - whether it be poppies, Korans, Flags, effegies (or however it is spelt) - it is all well out of order and the people who do these things need dealing with harshly.

Thank you, that was the answer I was looking for (ie agree with) and not what I expected.

Be thankful, those Islam planted bombs that were on those Freight Aircraft were detected that would have caused massacre to the Eastern Seaboard of our allies in the USA or even the UK mainland.
I despair anyone who can mitigate or give any excuse for these people saying its the only few. Yes, the EDF will gain momentum....any objections?

Yes, I object.

How about we tar all Christians with that brush? The bible tells people to kill those who practice other faiths. The Klu Klux Klan consider White Protestants to be superior than others - indeed KKK members were encouraged to "kill for christ", but we don't let that speak for every protestant do we?

One cannot deny that it is only the tiniest minority of Muslims that commit these extremist acts, and that they do not speak for the whole of the islamic community.

The EDL - give over! They're a bunch of cretinous football hooligans desperately trying to pretend that they're something else! They have about as much credibility as a chocolate watch.

Who got arrested at the poppy demonstration for attacking the police? A muslim protestor? - No, step forward the founder of the English 'Defence' League! And it's not the first time he's assaulted the police either!

Yes. EDF are a tiny, trouble making bunch of thugs who are no better than any other exremists. All of these people have one thing in common, they like to stri up hatred and violence at every available opportunity, and pretend that they are doing it for a bigger, more noble cause than the fact that they enjoy it.

You have to admit, EDF would be a lot brighter and more switched on than the EDL! (or the people who seem to support them!)
