Music trains

I've been on the Penistone Line music trains a few times now and really enjoyed them. Does anyone know of any other music trains elsewhere in the country?

There's one in the summer on the Esk Valley line between Whitby and Middlesbrough, Fridays only. Last year it departed Whitby at 1915 and back in at 2211.

does it have like a live band on there? or is it just like music played over the PA sort of thing?

It's a live, normally local, band. All you need is a train ticket as it's a normal public service train. There is normally a bar too! Check out the links above for some examples.

does it have like a live band on there? or is it just like music played over the PA sort of thing?

For lines other than the Penistone line the band usually play on board between a main station and a village station e.g. Chester and Plumley, the band alight at the village station and move on to play in a local bar. There's also a return journey back to the main station.

You don't need to buy any special ticket, just a standard rail ticket that's valid at the times of the music train.

There is a one between Manchester and Hathersage and I may have seen one Manchester to Buxton though I am not sure on the last one.

I've been on the Manchester to Glossop ones a few times. They're a great laugh, especially when normal commuters join in too.

There's used to be one on the Heart of Wales on Sundays with a jazz band.

I had hoped there would be something in the byelaws so I could object to music trains but they are allowed to annoy with music if they have written permission from the operator.

Not just that train. I was on a reasonably loaded Manchester - Llandudno service a few years ago and we were being treated to some Eastern European/Asian music through a small cassetted player. An acquired taste. There had been much tutting and and comments made to which the two men listening were oblivious. They didn't look like people you would like to confront but I was pleased when a young female teenager went and asked them ever so politely to turn it off which they did. Not a lot else they could do really.

There is one on the Stockport - Stalybridge once a week service on the 18th 9:22 from Stockport. This is part of the campaign to improve the level of service on the line.

I did the music trains that ran on the S&C using 1917 Leeds-Ribblehead & 2100 Ribblehead-Skipton. Very popular, so popular it warranted the use of the set that worked 1613 Morcambe-Skipton to be added at Skipton.
