Murray's become the first Brit in 76-years to win a Slam after an epic final, truely an immense match between himself and Djokovic. Congratulations!

Andy Murray beats Novak Djokovic to win US Open

Andy Murray ended Britain's 76-year wait for a male Grand Slam singles champion with an epic victory over Novak Djokovic in the US Open final.
Murray, 25, finally emulated Fred Perry's 1936 achievement, winning 7-6 (12-10) 7-5 2-6 3-6 6-2 in four hours 54 minutes in the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Murray also reached the Wimbledon final and won Olympic gold this summer.

"When I realised I had won, I was a little bit shocked, I was very relieved and I was very emotional," said Murray.

Despite his other successes, this result will arguably have a greater impact on his career and the future of tennis in the United Kingdom...

Agreed well done old son....

Sports Personality of the Year has just gone critical......

Bradley Wiggins Tour de France and Olympics and now Murray Olympic Tennis and Grand Slam Winner.....

Amazingly it's possible neither of them could win in what normally be a "shoe in" for either mans achievement.

I've never forgiven Murray for his anti-England comments and actions (like the Paraguay shirt being worn when they played England in the 2006 World Cup). I would still pick Wiggins for SPOTY, but the year's far from over yet.

It would be interesting if the BBC asked the public to vote for who should be on the short list. At least we should be spared any over-hyped footballers (perhaps Gareth Bale as the token oaf?)
Even "Team of the Year" is likely to be competitive.

So yes, congratulations to Murray. Perhaps we can now see we have had an excellent player for some time.

I wouldn't say I haven't forgiven him, but what I will say is that I hope an English athlete wins SPOTY.

It is noticeable that Andy Murray seems a far more of a harder proposition to beat since Ivan Lendl became his coach and he seems to be stronger mentally these days.

An interesting comparison is that both Ivan Lendl and Andy Murray won their first grand-slam at the fifth attempt.

Would the fact that in certain tournaments, Andy Murray plays mixed doubles with Laura Robson (who a certain forum member "carries a torch for"), have anything to do do with this feeling of animosity....:D

I'd go with Wiggins as well. Well done Murray though - proved me wrong. Question is, how many might he win now?

Well he's already won a final at SW19 (admittedly an Olympic final and not a actual main tennis competition) so could he be be in contention of winning a open over here

Asking a Scot who he wants to win the World Cup and getting the answer, "Anyone but England, ha ha." is hardly an earth shattering revelation.

Not that it is anyway relevant, but for the record, this is a man with an English girlfriend, living in England with a large English contingent in his support set-up.

As for the 'Paraguay shirt', Murray has consistently denied he ever wore, let alone bought one. A press embellishment most likely. But so what if he had? Can a Scot in the public eye not say or do some light-hearted stuff when it comes to the England - Scotland football rivalry? Hundreds of thousands of other people do so and aren't castigated for it.

Murray is often wrongly portrayed as a chippy Scot, most often by chippy English who's sense of superiority is upset by someone north of the border being successful.

So, if you don't what to forgive him for such a trivial matter then I see that as your problem, not Murray's. He has nothing to apologise for. It's only football and despite the words of Bill Shankly, it isn't a matter of life and death.

He'll always stand a chance at Wimbledon and Melbourne - if he wins the French I'll be truly amazed!

Has to be Mo Farah for me , the sheer determination on the face. Brilliant , Wiggo and Murray have been superb but Mo is supreme for me this year.

Fair play to him, at the end of the day, he's now a winner (unlike that 'chump' Henham)

I feel sorry for Henman - bar the dodgy British weather one evening, I'm convinced he'd have won Wimbledon. Instead, Goran took the spoils, and then came the era of Federer dominance.

Still, to look at the scale of Murray's achievement - the quality of tennis around now with the big 3 (4 if Nadal's knees ever get better) and Tsonga, Ferrer, Del Potro as the chasers compared to Henman's day when it was just really Pete Sampras and Agassi to worry about! The fact is, Henman was a damn good player, but Murray is on a whole different level. To win a major in an era of such wonderful players is immense.

Henman was at the top of the draw for that 2001 semi-final and if it had been held first then the match would likely have finished before it rained but I believe there was a request for Henman's semi-final be held second. I'm not sure he'd have beaten Rafter in the final though.

Henman also had a chance in 2003 as he was capable of beating Philipouses and consistently beat Federer until 2004 but despite beating the 2002 finalist Nalbandian in the fourth round, he lost to Grosjean in the quarter finals.

Also in 2004 Henman made the semi-final of the French Open and was a set and a break up against Coria, had he won that match I think he'd have had a reasonable chance of beating Gaudio on the final.

I seem to recall Rafter was on the way out by then, and I fully expected Henman to beat him, I'm convinced he would have.

Would Murray have won this time if he'd had to play Nadal?

Depends on which Nadal we're discussing! The one from 2 years ago was a better player than the one with bad knees that hasn't played since he got demolished by Rosol at Wimbledon.

Bit of a silly question really. How would anyone know?
It's not a silly question, it's hypothetical. The fact is that Murray had never beaten two of the top three in a grand slam and for his win he only had to play one.

So the guy cannot really win then? In order to really win a grand slam, you have to beat more than one of the top three?

I presume it isn't an attempt to discredit his achievement, but if it is, it's clutching at straws.

Yeah - the guy beat Berdych and Ferrer who are fine players! Remember it was Ferrer that did him over in Paris too. Cilic is no mug either! Djokovic is one of the best players to have ever played the game, and Murray beat him in a marathon encounter. I'd say that deserves a certain amount of respect!

Agreed, you can only play the opponent faced. 2/3 if you count the Olympics where he beat Federer :p

I'm not saying he didn't deserve to win, only that I'm not expecting him to start dominating the game Federer style. Nadal has repeatedly knocked Murray out of Wimbledon and if he recoveres from his injurues will be an obstacle for Murray if he is to win Wimbledon.

Who suggested he was going to start "dominating the game" let's just be grateful he has expunged the 70+ year hoodo

I'm not going to disagree with that, I don't really expect to see domination. What I do expect to see is him take more of a share of the slams from now on.
