End of the line for fare dodger who ridiculed rail firm with taunts of 'catch me if you can'

IT’S the end of the line for a fare dodger who goaded a rail company with taunts of “catch me if you can”.

Chef Richard Ruddy, 25, branded paying customers “muppets” and ridiculed South West Trains on Twitter as he avoided buying £4.40 tickets several times over the course of a year.

But his bragging eventually got him caught, and now he must pay back £48.10 he swindled, plus a £1,225 fine.

Salisbury Magistrates Court heard on Friday that a Twitter expert from the rail company had stumbled across the first of Ruddy’s tweets, from January 2016, before finding more posts detailing his exploits.

On February 17, Ruddy tweeted “Another £4.40 saved thanks @SW_Trains” later adding “catch me if you can”.

On February 20 he tweeted a photo of himself, saying “Which first class am I in @SW_Trains coach one or coach 4 #comegetme #noticket”.

And the next day he posted: “When the ticket man is scoffing a cream cake on carriage 1 if you sit in carriage 4 your [sic] home and dry”.

He admitted having dodged fares on 12 trips between Branksome and Christchurch, at a total cost of £48.10.

Defending, Paul Jones said Ruddy used the train to go to work and “could not believe that the tickets were not checked”.

Magistrate Simon Browning said it was the worst such case he had experienced.

“You were goading the company on Twitter, and what makes it worse is that you were mocking the staff and putting their photos on Twitter without their permission,” he said.

Ruddy, of Bournemouth Road, Poole, was ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work.

South West Trains said it took a “firm but fair” approach to the crime.

A spokesman said: “Every year, passengers are deprived of millions of pounds worth of potential improvements to their train services, as a direct result of deliberate fare evasion.”

A couple of the tweets from this "muppet" are on the newspaper article:

He was retweeted into my timeline a few times and I passed them onto SWT. Glad to hear that I might have contributed a little to him being caught.

Obviously he was a crook and an idiot, but was his criticism valid.

It was only from embarrassment that SWT decided to put enough effort into ticket enforcement to catch him.

Were the conditions to create this opportunity for the crook caused by SWT's lack of enforcement.

And as an aside, it would be interesting to know how much money SWT additionally collected during this period of proper enforcement, and whether it has continued after the crook was caught.

There are quite a few braggarts on Twitter when it comes to fare evasion. When I worked for Virgin I managed to get about a dozen, though that was by organising spot-checks, it never went as far as prosecution.

I'm disappointed that he wasn't actually one of the Muppets

Deserved all he got, but why did it take a 'twitter expert' to find the tweets he was sending directly to the company?

TOCs know f*** all about anything that involves a PC, tablet, smartphone or the internet. So an employee who knows how to use Twitter is immediately considered an expert.

It's also why TOC apps are so crap and ticket sites get upgrades that are anything but - TOC management never use them so they have no idea that the experts they're paying to do stuff are ripping them off and producing crap.

This is all plainly untrue.

I can imagine the reason it didn't get picked up(though I bet it did) was due to the sheer amount of stuff that gets posted on twitter and the team who sit there are more occupied with getting relevant information out to those who request it rather than someone who may or may not be joking around.

And how much time and effort do you go to to possibly be chasing fresh air around when the tweets didn't give no indication of where he was? This si why he was probably tracked for a lengthy period of time to find out who and where he was - in case you missed it SWT runs quite a big network.

For my train company I see many Tweets complaining about a lack of enforcement of First Class. If there is a response it is some platitude but no promises of action.

Instead of asking nicely if some enforcement action could be taken, perhaps their solution should be to create a fake Twitter profile and Tweet about "getting away with it again", as it seems only social media embarrassment provokes action.

I think we all get that you don't like the railway or anyone who has the temerity to be employed by the railway, but the quote from from a local newspaper, not SWT.

Well, he only has to blame himself for this. Its one thing to bunk the fare, but to then openly brag about it in the way this guy did simply makes him look like a conplete tool. A fine and 250 hours community service is what he received

Not true, I dislike the idiots who give the railway a bad image. Prime examples being GTR's customer services department at any time, and this week, the idiots at Southeastern who, after the #Lewisham derailment, though it was perfectly OK to announce ticket acceptance for the following day (or remainder of the week) and then randomly withdraw/re-instate that notice on the fly throughout each day, despite there being virtually no service running on some routes.

It's a dislike I wish I didn't have, but nothing changes, especially in the case of GTR who've exuded incompetence in customer services for year after year. It's not the fault of the customer services staff, it's the person who decided they didn't need any training. As an example - it's FIVE years since I started trying to get Gatwick Express to correct the error on their webpage regarding Off-Peak ticket validity; it's still wrong to this day :(.

I've met helpful and positive employees in many TOCs. This week, the helpful Southeastern front line staff were as stressed as the passengers, because it was invisible people in an office somewhere making random decisions to change previously published arrangements, leaving them to take the flak from passengers.

I find it hilarious - nice picture to sling arrows at and bear in mind whenever you see the slimy idiot out again to rub it in oh so politely.

NB - these people think they're untouchable - it's brilliant whenever they cop for it. Most crews could probably relate to a personal idiot or two that they just wish they could get lifted at the right time so when it happens it's almost like a dream come true! I had a moral victory over mine when he got sent to prison for an unrelated matter, I had a good laugh at the court section of the newspaper there as well. I look forward to leaving him stood on the platform again in several years when he gets out.

I can't prove this, but I've noticed that every time the franchise comes up for renewal SWT revenue protection goes down the pan; I've always thought that this was a tactic to fool other bidders about the real level of growth. I rather hope that this time it didn't work.

Wish we'd use valuable court time to deal with proper criminals, rather than some idiot who deprived the TOC of £48.

It was a private prosecution so the only drain on public resources was the likely 10 minutes that it took to hear the case. And a portion of that £1,225 fine will have paid for that time.

Ah, of course, the obligatory 'proper criminals' comment. In fact, using that absolutely flawless logic, we should allow people to repeatedly steal library books, haircuts, meals, beers, bus journeys and DVDs without prosecuting them, because hey, they're not proper criminals. Right on.

By that logic, until all murder cases are solved, we should simply ignore all other criminals.

Not sure whether to laugh or to cry.

No doubt if someone stole £48 from you and they were let off because they were not regarded as a "proper criminal", you'd be the first to complain about it.

How much does one have to steal to be a 'proper criminal'? £50? £500? £5,000? Does it make any difference whether you mug an old lady or break into a safe?
Mugging an old lady is clearly acceptable as long as you steal less than £50. If you were to find more in her purse, always give some money back and you'll be fine.

However, if you mug an old lady in a rich part of town I think the value goes up. I'm sure there are people out there with a nice spreadsheet that shows all of this so we can know when courts should, or should not, prosecute.

I actually thought that most people think courts should just be murderers and rapists these days?

Presumably that is index linked to account for inflation. It must get complicated in the case of the theft of foreign currency or gold bullion, what exchange rate do they use?

Good point. Post Brexit, that must have seriously affected how much money you can take from tourists carrying foreign currency...

I think it's actually specified in Special Drawing Rights and converted on the fly. That's why so many muggers and thieves carry calculators.
