Reports are coming in of a shooting at the OEZ shopping centre in Munich, apparently there are a multiple deaths. This could help Germany's far right movement in a twisted way if the attack was committed by a Muslim.

Completely nuts. I used to live just 10 minutes walk away from the OEZ and like most places in Munich it's usually very calm around there.

It's a real shame, but there have been warning signs of Islamic terrorism, what with the train incident and ISIL propaganda. This attack will not be good for Merkel's popularity.

Was there only a month ago and seemed like a fairly pleasant and calm area. One of my friends is in Munich at the minute and is due to head home today and still waiting for a response. Slightly worried since he's due to pass the Moosach area to change from U to S Bahn at roughly the time of the incident so I'll wait eagerly for a response.

Police have asked the entire city to stay at home or to take shelter as the attackers are still at large. Quite something since the city is larger than Birmingham.

Das Bild, a German tabloid, is reporting three attackers and minimum six dead with further injured. Witnesses say shots were fired randomly at passers by outside a branch of McDonalds.

From the photos I'm quite familiar where this took place, and it's just a normal road really.

Five years to the day Anders Breivik went postal, might not be a coincidence.
One of the gunmen has shot himself apparently.

My thoughts and prayer go out to all those affected. I hope it ends peacefully with no more deaths.

I saw footage online of a shooter outside a McDonald's, I did wonder if it was genuine.

My initial comments about the attacks being carried out by a Muslim extremist seem rather hollow because the shootings were carried out by white people, one of whom shouted "f*ck foreigners". I did consider the prospect of the attacks being carried out by Neo Nazis, but I had assumed that it was an extremist Muslim due to recent events.

Either way, this is concerning and it highlights the tensions that have arisen due to the recent arrival of Middle Eastern migrants.

There is a heck of a lot of overlap between Islamic fundamentalists and the far-right: violent anti-semitism, homophobia, misogyny, authoritarianism and a dehumanisation of the outgroup be it kafir (disbelievers) or foreigners.

Thoughts to everyone involved with this. German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung has Tweeted that the Munich police say there's no indication of it being an Islamic terror attack.

I'm not surprised. Breivik and his ilk seem to put great significance in anniversaries and dates - just look at how many neo-Nazis have Hitler's birthday tattooed somewhere.

CNN have broadcast an interview with a supposed eyewitness who claimed one of the gunmen yelled "Allahu akbar".

Seems police have closed down all public transport in Munich. Knowing how busy the Hautbanhof ( main station ) esp on a Friday evening this will cause massive disruption but knowing German efficiency they will deal with it.

I think that has been more than countered by telling citizens to stay at home.

Where did they dig them up, because that goes against all the other info that has come out.

I had to admit that I assumed Daesh but German friends of mine who've seen footage are talking about Saxony accents and one of the guys yelling "I am German"

A friend of a friend is adamant that it's NSU (National Socialist Underground) or some similar group. NSU certainly proved themselves capable of some pretty heavy violence with about 15 murders to their name but most of the original NSU are dead or in prison.

It's an interesting one. The "witness" claimed that she was a Muslim herself. Maybe she was just telling CNN what she thought they wanted to hear in order to get on TV? At the moment we simply don't know but her account does seem inconsistent with everything else we've heard about the case.

Mark Urban on 'Newsnight' speculating that there was only one, black-clad gunman and that he is dead (there is a 'ninth' death which the authorities are not including in their casualty list): the reports of three gunmen probably based on the very rapid involvement of specialist plain-clothes police/militia, who they could easily be mistaken for.

I wonder what the Baader-Meinhof gang would have made of the events in Munich today?

How insane is RT? They seem to be downplaying the likelihood that the attackers are far-right Germans and are instead blaming the attacks on the EU's anti-Assad stance.

There we go then, 10 Dead including the single gunman who shot himself. Hopefully death toll doesn't rise any further

And yes, RT running a line that sides with Russia's allies isn't a surprise.

Edit: was only half listening, but I think that the head of police said that the shooter was an 18 year old Iranian? Also added that of the 21 injured, 3 are critical

BBC are now reporting 1 attacker

BBC News said:
A shooting at a Munich shopping centre which left nine people dead was carried out by one gunman who then killed himself, German police have said.

The suspect was an 18-year-old German-Iranian dual national who lived in Munich, police told a news conference, but his motive is unclear.

Sixteen people were injured, three critically, police added.

A huge manhunt was launched following reports that up to three gunmen had been involved in the attack.

The body of the suspect was found about 1km (0.6 miles) from the Olympia shopping centre in the north-western suburb of Moosach.

Obviously more investigation is needed but given that the gunman is reported to have been half Iranian, an IS link seems unlikely. In crude terms, that would be like linking a protestant to an IRA attack. It could be a simple case of untreated mental illness - which might be a more accurate way to report all these attacks, to be honest, but for some reason we prefer the "evil supervillain" theory.

He will of course eventually be declared a mentally ill loner as opposed to having been influenced by right wing propaganda.
