Munich Hauptbahnhof

One of the great crossroads of Germany there have been a few threads (now closed) on this area. I have added a gallery which is my digital notebook of a morning spent photographing trains. You can find it at

Like many German stations freight uses other routes around the city and a later gallery will cover one of the best places to see freight in the Munich area.

I remember when my parents threw me off the couchette to Austria at Munich at about 4 in the morning to meet one of my friends at Friedrichshafen Flughaven. Was quite impressive even though it was still dark.

Not at Hauptbahnhof - best place Heimeranplatz - to the west of Hbf. There is stacks of freight and I will be adding two galleries covering this station to my website in the next 4 or 5 days.

Its a briliant station with plenty of loco hauled passenger as well.

I have now posted two galleries of trains seen at Munich Heimeranplatz station during an afternoon's observation. The variety is wonderfuil for a modern railway. Diesels on passenger including double headers and stacks of freight!

I note that there's no hi-vis orange on the fronts of the loco stock, and wonder whether German railways have a higher accident rate than our own?

There is a different attitude to health and safety - rather than a nanny state they teach you to look for yourself. rather than "mind the gap between the train and the platform" as in the UK the Germans expect you to look where you are going!

Actually, I'd say they go one better than that, and make sure there is no gap between the train and platform!

Yes that's true - the railway engineering standards in Germany are superb with very tight clearances between train and platform edge.

What are the station staff like? I go on the 10.50 ICE to Nurnberg on wed from Munchen, can you take pictures on the platforms?

there are gaps between train & platform on Berlin u-bahn. Not noticed it anywhere else.

Re taking photos, I believe there is no problem. You can also take photos from Hackerbrücke which is just to the west of hauptbahnhof or behind Bayerstrasse 34 down to 20, heading toward hbf platforms 5-10 aka Holzkirchner Bahnhof

Didn't have any problems with staff when I was over there earlier this year and was able to take pictures on the platforms. All the platforms are open so relatively easy to walk down, but one of them has a model shop near the country end, and also another exit, so very easy to go down there.

The shunter appeared ambivalent when I took this pic so I think the staff are well used to enthusiasts:

Did you note that the shunter works alone, commanding the loco by remote control and doing the coupling work.

Indeed, and they seem quite skilled at it based on the speed some of them were doing. Might be avid xbox players or something!
