I remember a while ago there was a thread on how someone got a huge number of coupons for one round trip, but it later transpired that the round trip had been booked using multiple split ticketing.
I have just been surprised by the number of coupons issued for a simple round trip (Chelmsford to/from Alderley Edge) issued as two advance purchase singles!
Depart Chelmsford 9.15 via Liverpool Street to Euston
Catch the 10.40 from Euston (Manchester train) change at Wilmslow (arrives 12.26)
At Wilmslow catch the 12.31 train (destination Crewe), travel one stop to Alderley Edge arrives 12.34
If miss this connection, the next train for this 3 minute journey is at 13.02 arrives 13.05
Fare for this part of the trip is £17.15
Return trip
Depart Alderley Edge at 17.24 on train to Crewe arriving at 17.46
(note this is departing in same direction as arrived, not returning same way as came!)
At Crewe catch the 17.56 train to Euston arrives 19.38
Across to Liverpool Street by tube for train to Chelmsford. Worst case 20.30 departure, but should be able to make it for the one before at 20.18.
Fare for this part of the trip is £20.15
My expectation was 4 coupons, namely two singles for travel, and two reservation coupons, one for each of the VTWC legs of the journey. Even better would have been just two coupons, of the new format, with the travel and the VTWC reservations on the coupon.
What actually arrived, booked on the GA website and issued (I think) by trainline, was 8 coupons,
one each way for travel, one each way for seat reservation on GA, one each way for seat reservation on VTWC and one each way for specified train on Northern.
This is rather OTT I think. It also seems to mean that the passenger could not catch an earlier train from Alderley Edge to Crewe on the way back, if it suited them, nor catch the 20.18 from Liverpool Street to Chelmsford and save 12 minutes there if the transfer from Euston to Liverpool Street went well.
Could the tickets have been issued with less coupons? If so why weren't they? What would be the consequence of catching an earlier train from Alderley Edge to Crewe?
