Multiple working question

Hi,

I was at Inverness station this afternoon and noticed a 158 in Maroon livery coupled to a 170 in the usual Saltire livery.

As I observed, the train departed, the time was 1534. I looked on RTT later on and I think it must have been the 1529 Inverness to Aberdeen (1A56). It is shown on RTT as 5L departing Inverness.

My question is, is this usual, different classes working in service? I’ve seen like different classes of Sprinter in multiple before but never classes so different if that makes sense.

Not that unusual. WMR run 170 and 153s together.

ATW, GWR and Northern run 15x and Pacers in multiple all day long. As long as wiring, couplings etc., are compatible they'll work.

1 x 158 + 1 x 170 a regular occurence on Scotrail! Nothing unusual with that combination at all.

In Glasgow. The class 318s work in multiple with class 320s often, probably more common to see a 318/320 combo than a 318/318 or 320/320 combo. And during depot movements from shields to Yoker etc, they can work in 9 car formations so you get things like 320/318/320 etc.

When the ex-LM class 321s came, they were in London midland livery for a short time so you'd get some crazy livery combinations such as the Scotrail blue from 320, the carmine/cream from the 318(now all scotrail blue) and the London midland green from 321(now all scotrail blue), imagine that in a 9 car formation.

First purple is not maroon to me . Hearts Fc strip is .
Seem a 156 and 170 combo on Scotrail though thats rare now

There are a couple of daily lifts between Queen St/Eastfield that are booked a 170&156. Unusual in passenger service though, yes.

There's a sticker in some 170 cabs that prohibit coupling electrically to a 142. Not sure why but there are usual railway rumours that 142 electrical relays will set fire.

Assuming it was 1A56, that's showing as having been formed of 158739 + 170454 yesterday.

Yeah i only recall once for the Leuchars Airshow .
There was 156 and 158 combo on the shotts line last year im sure .

Not sure if it's a common occurrence, but sometimes when a 158 and 170 are coupled together, the conductors announcements can become garbled and jumpy. Usually if the conductor is working from the 158 when its at the rear... Experienced it a few times when I've been on the 1741 Glasgow to Aberdeen.

They’re going to have to take care when they start receiving the 170s... although in saying that, it’ll be a quick and dirty way to put the Pacers out of service
