Multi Skilled Technician

Hi all, I have seen a position advertised with GWR for a 'multi skilled technician' and I was just curious what the job entails and what kind of person they would consider taking on before applying for it.

From reading the advert they are clearly after someone with a mechanical background but surely they can't expect someone to know about trains randomly unless they have worked in the trade previously?

I have a BTEC ND as a motor vehicle technician when I left college but I have only worked in a garage for almost 2 years previously. I have also had a job that involved working on big diesel generators and I have always loved that sort of work, but I managed to progress into IT instead where I am now.

I want to work for GWR and when I saw this advert it really clicked for be but I'm thinking realistically what they want and whether they would train you up fully over time to do the job.

They’ll usually want a qualification in vehicle maintenance such as a Level 3 NVQ or City & Guilds in light vehicle mechanics or similar. I doubt they would expect you to have any hands on experience with trains, as the other qualifications are generally transferable. You’ll probably need to be trained in certain areas which would be new to you obviously, however. Nothing to lose in applying. The worst that they’ll do is reject your application form.

Ideal, thanks for the info! Hopefully my qualification will be enough along with my experience and joy with working on machinery.
