Same in Ireland. RPU board a long distance commuter service and suddenly everyone is buying tickets online 1 or 2 hours after they boarded.
€100 fine + full fare for each of them.

What do you define as long distance? I was over in the Dublin area a couple Thursdays ago, and the Leap system (very easy smartcard to use and very cheap) seemed to stretch out as far as Maynooth.

There are certainly some SNCF dislike on this thread. I was travelling from Marseille to Genoa today via Cannes and Ventimiglia and because of vandalism on lines between Marseille and Toulon, nothing was moving towards Nice. I eventually boarded a very delayed regional service to Cannes but that became further delayed on departure. SNCF gave out picnic boxes to all passengers on the train. Unexpected pleasure , but welcomed by most. Their Staff are usually okay , in my recent experiences. Some passengers do like to test the waters and complain when they get caught.

Dinosaurs like me buy paper tickets; safest way as long as there is a ticket office or TVM. Otherwise, stick to Luxembourg, where I believe train travel is free.

Except on some TER trains I still don't understand how to validate (compost) tickets from a TVM. I think I asked on here but don't recall getting any answers.

Outside the leap zone. House prices are mental in Dublin so people are coming in from Arklow, Longford, Newry etc on a daily basis.

I knew that house prices were mental anywhere in county Dublin - but Newry?!!! That's just absurdity.

Why?

Long distance commuting has been a choice for some, and latterly more a fact of life in the eastern counties for many, since the 1990s, and there has been a commuter service between Newry and Dublin since that time.

People commute to Dublin from Newry, Dundalk, Longford, Athlone, Thurles, Carlow and Gorey every day.
