I think a lot of people claim to want simpler prices but the reality is different. Even Lidl is doing app only discounts these days.

When I am paying I often do split tickets. But when I’m travelling for work I’m not bothering with that, I don’t get the savings and might get some raised eyebrows when I submit my expenses. Plus on a long trip I want the same reserved seat all the way.

People want cheaper, predictable prices. The predictable bit is the simplicity aspect.

When you regularly buy a ticket for £x and all of a sudden it has doubled to £y for no apparent reason, that will be perceived as a fleecing.

I don't think the argument is strictly about simple Vs complex pricing.

It's about there not being hidden tricks/cheats in the system that a few people know about (and therefore other mugs will be subsidising).

An example from years ago, since we're referring to supermarkets. Items could be for example £1.99 but 2 for £2.99. Fair enough.

However I figured out that if these items were also hitting Best Before date and individually were yellow stickered to 99p...buy two and it'd be 99p+99p and the till would still take off a further 99p from the original discount. 99p for two items.

Supermarkets chipped that out of their systems at least a decade or two ago.

You say that, but I managed to get a Tesco meal for just over £3 earlier this week, seemingly because one item was reduced. No idea how that works - I'd expect to still pay the Clubcard price of £3.40 unless the total adds up to less than that.
