Yesterday (23/07/2024) an almost 100% service from Bolton Station was only marred by the 21:31 service to Wigan being cancelled by Train Staff issues from Manchester Victoria. "This service was cancelled between Manchester Victoria and Wigan North Western due to an issue with the train crew (TH)".

A great improvement on past regular cancellations on Manchester Airport to Blackpool and Stalybridge to Southport services.

RTT says that a total of 25 scheduled departures from Bolton were cancelled yesterday. The difference with the 2131 being that it was cancelled on the day, the rest were cancelled by the night before. That doesn't include three journeys which were substituted by bus, reason not known.

I was going to say, I travel to and from there every week day and there was a cancelled Rochdale on the board around 5pm and I'm sure another one too... Other trains were marginally late but nothing horrific.

This evening: 17.21 Man Airport cancelled, a Southport train after that cancelled too... it's regular as clockwork so it's no wonder...

Bolton is ranked worst out of the busiest 500 stations! It couldn’t be anything further from the OP’s claims!

It's easy to build a picture of the worst routes by reliability
Kearsley/Farnworth/Moses Gate are due to the Southport to Stalybridge services. Interesting that the peak calls from Clitheroe/Blackburn services marginally pull up Moses Gate and Farnworth compared to Kearsley.

Ince & Elton is due to the daily cancelled Ellesmere Port service.

Blackrod/Adlington is from Manchester to Blackpool North unreliability.

Ah, so the Clitheroe peaks dont stop at Kearsley?
Seems a bit odd, I thought anything that stopped at Moses gate would call at Farnworth and Kearsley too.

In the morning
2J21 and 2J23 call at Moses Gate only. 2J22 calls at Farnworth only.
In the evening
2N52 and 2B81 call at Farnworth only

The 2J23 and 2B81 calls enable the Southport service to call at Clifton instead.

All makes sense now. Thanks. Capacity must be obviously tight then.

The services from Southport- Stalybridge regularly get held at Lostock Jct for late running Blackpool-Airport stopping services which themselves are usually 2-3 mins late at Lostock due to delays crossing at Euxton Junction. The Stalybridge service is usually on time until Lostock Jct. After that it's normally 3-4 mins late leaving Bolton and then stops at Moses Gate, Farnworth and Kearsley, but makes up time by Salford Crescent.

Going the other way at Salford Crescent it's the same issue waiting for the Blackpool service threading it's way through Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Deansgate. Usually 2 mins late here but can arrive at Bolton on time.
