MSTS or Rail Simulator?

Hi,

I'm going to get a train simulator. I have Trainz, but that's gone all weird....
So which one should I buy? What I preferably want...

- A game which will work on most general PC's
- Fairly realistic (which I know both are)
- Controllable from keyboard (I played MSTS once and had to use the mouse, which kind of kept making me screw things up)
- Fun

So, which one is better for me, MSTS or Rail Sim?

Forget RailSim its dead. RailWorks replaced it.

You're going to have to be more specific about your own PC specs if you expect us to give you an answer.

I would say if your PC can handle it go for Railworks.

I'd go for MSTS because thry graphics may not be as good, but you can get good quality freeware routes/trains, like DCv6, whereas RW is all payware

I would say RS/RW as its relistic,better graphics and good missions and the cabs of trains you can look around better and you get a better look around teh cab better and diffrent views than msts.

Anyway MSTS has more missions and and far more addons(As its been out 2002) but not that good graphics compared to RS.

Never ever get TRAINZ as it is crap,graphics are very bad,and the design your own route is good,easy,BUT you only limited to a certain space.

Definitely go for MSTS. You can pick up a copy (sold under the Xplosiv label) for about £10. The graphics aren't as good as RailWorks but on the upside, it has a lot more add-on value.

A few routes I'd recommend:

Dorset Coast v6 (available as a download from uktrainsim.com, but should be available as a DVD with activities and stock etc. by the end of the year). A massive route that covers Waterloo - Weymouth & Portsmouth, the Waterloo suburban lines, Basingstoke - Salisbury and Southampton - Salisbury, plus everything in between.

Thames-Mersey 4.2 (download or DVD for £4.40). A very long route which is Euston - Liverpool/ Manchester plus the Wirral Lines and Chester - Crewe - Manchester. Comes with 150 activities and tons of stock

West Somerset Railway (produced by JustTrains, about £20-25 from Amazon). An almost lifelike recreation of the West Somerset Railway.

Great Eastern (produced by Making Tracks, same price). A very detailed route, set in the late 1980s, which includes London - Ipswich, as well as the Southend Victoria line, along with a few others

Manchester Metrolink (from Uktrainsim.com, DVD retails for £4.40). A very good reproduction of the Manchester Metrolink tram network. The trams even feature next station announcements!
