Her holding of NR managers to account following the rugby debacle was truly a demonstration of mastering your brief and picking holes in their answers. She was direct, and focussed. Truly the Uk transport sector has lost one of the principled people who would stand up for the passenger.

I wonder which Broonite will get the job now?

One of the very few politicians able to talk any sense on transport related matters, her sucessor will have a hard act to follow.

She was that rare breed - a politician trusted by all sides of the House of Commons! And a great champion of public transport... she will be much missed.....

Leading figures in the rail industry have paid tribute to Gwyneth Dunwoody MP, who died early today after a brief illness. She was 77. The leader of the Transport Select Committee and MP for Crewe and Nantwich was a well liked and respected figure on the railways. Her no-nonsense approach to transport was often controversial but always sincere. Says George Muir, Director General of ATOC, ‘Gwyneth was a passionate supporter of the railway in the UK over many years and never afraid to express strong views on its development. We will miss her energy, enthusiasm and good humour. The railway industry has lost a good friend.’ RMT general secretary Bob Crow echoed Mr Muir, saying, ‘Transport workers have lost a good and true friend in Gwyneth Dunwoody.’ Mrs Dunwoody frequently travelled by train to her constituency which she had represented since 1974. Says Tony Collins, Chief Executive, Virgin RailGroup, ‘She has been a fantastic ambassador for her constituency and great advocate for rail travel. I will certainly remember her for her integrity, sharp mind and a withering sense of humour.’
