Hi, I am moving jobs from Northern to TPE on 3rd June. I am a safeguarded member of BR staff and receive 16 free boxes as well as currently unlimited free travel on all Northern / Merseyrail / Grand Central and Tyne & Wear Metro (through recipical agreement with Northern).

Can any one advise is I will be required to hand back my BR boxes to Northern and await for them to be re-issued from TPE or should I just continue to use the same card. I know of course my Northern pass will have to be returned!. Does anyone know what level of travel I would get on TPE / First group services.

thanks in advance

Boxes+Company free.

Not sure if the First group companies- only boxes (10 days) are given to protected staff.

Just curious but 2 questions if I may.

What are 'boxes' ?

What are your reasons for moving from Northern to TPE? (Are you a driver?)

Cheers

I was always under the impression (probably incorrectly,) that if you were safeguarded staff and moved to another company not through TUPE, you would lose your BR benefits?

If the company you are moving to is not in the scheme then you would lose them or if there is a break of service then you would also lose them, but if it is continuous service then you keep all travel benefits.

If your a safeguard member of staff (ex British Rail) you retain your privilege travel until and into retirement.

If you move from FTP to Northern, you retain.
If you move from FTP to DRS, you lose them is my understanding as DRS aren't in the ATOC group of operators.

However if you move to DBS or even Colas you retain them, again is my understanding.

The best bit of advice any of us can give if your unsure, or just to 100% confirm is contact RST direct.

Nope - all First TOC staff get them as far as I know.

Benefits include;

- 10 boxes, each gives two days of free travel on First Group TOCs with a handful of exceptions.

- Access to the First My Rewards scheme, where you get 48 units worth of benefits. A £6 Off Peak day rover for one of FCC, FGW, FSR or FTPE costs one unit per person. There are 8 separate units for Hull Trains day rovers. You can take up to 4 accompanying passengers.

- My Rewards also offers £6 weekly Firstbus rovers which can be given out to anyone.

In addition to the usual Priv and FIP benefits.

I'm non-safeguarded so not totally sure but the T&Cs on the back of the First railcard specifically refers to this issue. "The pass is issued to non-safeguarded employees, their spouses/partners and dependants only".

That seems pretty definitive but maybe there is a similar First Group pass for safeguarded employees.

Safeguarded Employees do not get the First Group boxes, they are given to New Entrants only.

No need for Safeguard Employees to get First Group boxes, when we get up to 20 boxes for the whole network.
New Entrants only get the First Group boxes, and therefore cannot travel free over the complete network.

- Access to the First My Rewards scheme,.....

First My Rewards also gives you discounts at many retailers too,
such as gift cards at up to 10% discount, or discounts on some holidays.
