I've just noticed some GTR fares seem to have been moved from Any Permitted to "." recently.

Does anyone know when this happened? I'm pretty sure it was after the price increases.

Some examples are Hassocks/Burgess Hill/Haywards Heath to Gatwick Airport.

This has been the case for many "any permitted" tickets in Scotland for probably more than five years now.

These changes invariably happen at the same time as the fares round, and there was one in March and another this weekend.

On the Great Northern side Any Permitted changed to '.' years ago.

That would make the most sense.

Will say it's only a limited number that have changed to "." that I've seen. For example, you won't see any from Brighton to Gatwick with route ".", but I assume that's since you can travel on two routes with those tickets, so the change could introduce extra confusion instead.

Yes, ostensibly it's only happening where there's only one route for the journey. "Any permitted" is obviously superfluous for these cases.

This would explain the difference between stations such as Hassocks/Burgess Hill and Brighton, such that a ticket from Brighton can be used via Hove or Lewes for such journey resulting in >1 route available.

I don't think that's the stated intention anywhere. It's certainly not the way it has been implemented, for example Manchester to Romiley would never have changed over if so.

what is the logic behind changing routes from "any permitted" to "."?

And if they are intended to mean the same thing, then why didn't they just change the name, rather than creating a new ticket type?

Simplification I'd imagine as people were confused by it and without any text the casual traveller would presume "oh this is valid everywhere between A-B, doesn't say otherwise".

Elsewhere they've tended to put in a place that is on that one route, e.g. MKC to the North West are mostly routed Rugby. That's at least a bit clearer.

The idea was to move to say nothing at all but some systems couldn’t cope with that hence the “.”
This was true about 10 years ago. No one has ever asked since then if systems could now cope without a value, or prepared the ground for it.

Customers sometimes interpret “any permitted” as “any route is permitted”.

I used the word "ostensibly" for a reason!

Yes, that's the approach I'd probably have picked had it been up to me.

Seen a couple of route - dot on the WCML. Will keep an eye out for the exact one.

Yes, but I what I was saying is that I don't think it's even ostensibly the case. It sounds like that's just one company's interpretation of the removal of Any Permitted routes.

It's very frustrating as I posted at the time the first ones were done, because lots of new ticket machines were programmed to go back to the BR convention of hiding the route entirely if the route was Any Permitted. However, they can't do so if it's just a dot, so a dot now prints where previously nothing did.

Indeed, it's actually had that opposite effect to the one intended, because a dot has to be displayed now despite it giving precisely zero information.

Oh, I see what you mean. Perhaps that is the case.

For what it's worth, I agree that using the full-stop is probably the worst of the options.
