I don't know the answer to this. I'm just curious.

What station has the largest number of platforms (still structurally there - with rails) but do not get used?

For example. Headstone lane (or Hatch End) has platforms on the fast lines into Euston, but only the Overground platforms are used. Same as Harrow and Wealdstone where the station is developed but the platforms are not used.

So. Harrow & Wealdstone would be 2 unused platforms. Headstone Lane would be 4 unused platforms.

Unused by passengers or unused by the railway totally? Because if its just unused by passengers then Hull has 5 disused platforms still there and railed. But they are used by various TOCs and NR for stabling overnight and during the day.

There is a east facing bay platform at Leeds that I have never, ever seen used for passenger services. Forget what number it is though. 10?

Talking a few years ago here so it might be used more now.

If it is 10, then your not paying attention ;) that one is used regularly for the Leeds to Doncaster 321 services. Has been for a good few years now I would have thought.

He did say East facing and wasn't sure of the number.
To me that would be the bay under the multi storey carpark at the east end of the station facing Neville Hill and Selby.
Is it platform 4?

Ah yes, forgot about the one that you access by going to the east end of Platform 8.

No, this is the east bay platform on the island with the covered waiting room with the cafe inside. Never seen any train use it for a passenger service.

EDIT - it is Platform 14 I am on about. The one you mention is platform 7. No other east facing bay platforms exist at Leeds.

7 must be used quite rarely too. Don't think any normal regular service terminates at Leeds from the East, unless it is a peak time extra, stopping short at night, starting early in the mornings, or during engineering work.

What should be 5 at Southampton Central has not been used for passenger services for many years, and I think only has a ground signal as a starter. Also, the bay at Bournemouth cannot be used now as it could only accommodate a 4-car.

Is there a southerly facing bay (Country end) at Woking as well that is not used?

First sorry if my first reply to you was a bit rude it wasn't my intention

I have seen platform 14 used a few times, normally it was a pacer in the bay. So it is used just not very often. I suspect that it may well have the same status as 7 of being used in peak times only.

There is a 0621 to Portsmouth Harbour SO I believe uses it (p6 I believe you mean, it's only accessible from Worplesdon).

Blackpool North: it's quite interesting that each departure an hour uses a separate platform, and on days this can vary, never known 8 to be used though.

Hatch End: the platforms on the WCML Proper have been out of use since 1960s electrification IIRC.

Queen's Park (London): p5&6 on the WCML Slows only have one unadvertised LM train stopping late at night M-F, and the platforms aren't within public access anyway, similar to Wembley Central a few miles north.

I have been on a Selby Northern Rail service from the p14 at Leeds IIRC about 2 years back.

Skegness: I think I'm correct in saying 7 platforms, only 2 are ever used, p2 first with p3 used if needed, p4-8 are overgrown with grass, you would think they were Beeching closures. I asked at the booking office there in Summer and was told that only 2 & 3 have been in use over the past few years (inc. railtours etc).

Oh, and on the c2c network, the stations on the LUL District line Barking-Upminster had their LTS platforms closed with 1960s electrification: most remain for passengers to see.

Edinburgh Waverley has 2 unused bays, plstforms 5 and 6 (no longer numbered) which used to be the Motorail platforns. They're still platforms, just used as sidings. The Motorail ramps are still there.

Aberdeen p1 & 2 look like they have been disused for many years.
Bushey p3, Esher (island platform) and New Malden (island platform) I would say have all been out of use since the 70s.
Polesworth... you can't even get to the southbound platform.
p1 & 2 at Shrewsbury (the bays for Craven Arms and southwards).
Queenstown Rd Battersea p1 has been out of use for a while too.

I've seen 14 used in the morning peak - sometimes a Pacer off Selby uses it and quite often the 08.27 off York used to use it when it ran. In the evening I've been on TPEs that have started at Leeds to go to York from it.

Yes, 14 seems to be used quite regularly by Eastbound stoppers. Platform 7 less so - although I glided into it for the first time a couple of months ago on a terminating TPE from Hull.

Six platforms remain at Skegness (numbered 2 to 7). The islands formed by 3 and 4 had some money spent on the canopy a few years ago, so I presume these are used by most trains nowadays (my own occasional experiences agree!). I seem to remember being told that an S&T problem of some sort (facing crossover from Down Main to Up Main?) was preventing access to the higher numbered platforms anyway - not sure if that's resolved, but there's certainly no operational need to get in there with the current service (I remember going there quite frequently on summer Saturdays not very many years ago at all, and the place seemed continually full of units!).

Is 2 ever used at York? I saw an out of service TPE there the other week but never seen anything leave there in passenger service

There is a TPE 185 in there whenever I go through usually, however, seen as there only seem to be York-Scarborough (i.e. not from Manchester/Leeds etc) during the Summer weekends, and with 2 only being accessible to/from Scarborough, so it looks like SSuO Summer passenger services in there. It may be used for stock stabling (well obviously it is) more frequently, but as seen above, its passenger service is minimal.

old platform 2 at penryn, completely unused, but has a train passed through it every half hour. it as disused for about 40 years, and they built a loop around 5 years ago, and now up and down trains both use platform 1, at the same time, one on the south end and one at the north end,

Normally only for unit storage, sometimes if there are problems with a late running service from Scarborough, they terminate the train at York, put it into 2 and move passengers onto other TPE services through to Manc or Liverpool. Was being used recently with the engineering work in Scarborough as well.

Apart from Sundays for the Darlington service, but thought this was supposed to change to a Darlo - Metrocentre service via Hpl soon.
