Rare but at times an SWR service to west country may be made of 10cars, leaving a possible formation of 159+159+158+158 for example.

Video below, credits to author.

I have always wondered whether a ten coach formation of 158+158+158+158+158 (5x2car158) has ever happened. It must have happened at some point. I can not find any photos or videos.

Southern have run 171+171+171+171+171 (5x2car171) on a couple of occassions in the past:

Although you will no longer see this since they have now reformed most of them to three car units.

5x2HAP used to be quute common on the South Eastern.
Anither five unit formation , very occasional, was MLV- TLV - CEP- BEP - CEP on boat trains.
8-car 1st generatiin DMUs formed as fiur twins were not unknown.
Did 6 x 2 HAP ever happen? There were plenty of 12 car workings on the SED but going back 45 years I seem to remember that most included at least one Vep, but I'm sure that 12 Hap must have operated on occasions.

I found a photo of one of the 456+456+456+456 (8x2car) workings:

I think this was one of the ECS workings when they were going to and from the storage yards between when SN withdrew them and when SWT received them.

For electric units in 750V DC land, there is a limit to the power that one train can consume; see the attached picture of the Sectional Appendix. Anything normally capable of drawing more power than the infrastructure can give will have to have some of its motors isolated to stay within the limit. Thus the 6 x 377 that was seen when a 12-car rescued a 12-car would necessarily have had the acceleration of a tadpole in treacle.

I'm surpruised that 2-car EMUs have the same rating as 4-car, especially as 5x2HAP was common and would have exceedced the index limit of 16. Typo?

According to the "Blood & Custard" website some boat trains ran for a short while with two MLVs and three x 4CEP/BEP, (five units) giving a total index of 16. As this was a greater power/weight ration than necessary and the MLVs were a scarce resource, some ordinary hauled stock vans were given EP type control cables in 1968 so they could replace one of the two MLVs in such a formation, and called TLVs. Having no cabs they were a nuisance for shunting (although cabless units were re-introduced for the Gatwick Express in the form of class 488), and didn't last long (gone in 1975)

On a 4x377 12 coach train at the moment. Full at 09:50 on a Sunday morning with Gatwick flyers and Londoners heading to the coast.

It has been a while since i last saw one of those. It looks like 377310 + 377318 + 377317 + 377315 are on a Brighton to London diagram today. London Victoria is closed to many services this weekend so that probably makes it even busier.

Certainly a very rare formation. I wonder if these are the only occassions that six DMUs have run coupled to each other.
I saw a photo on Facebook of a 12 car Sprinter in service from Birmingham to Cardiff. It was 4 x 150 + 2 x 156 led by 150255. I assume in connection with a football match.

I thought the same. A 2EPB had half the motors of a 4EPB and typically used half the power. Same goes for 456 compared with 455. Does the same not apply to 466/465?

There was a rare 158+158+158+158 (4x158) formation a few days ago:

This is the first time that i have seen SWR or SWT operate one of these formations.

I would imagine Dalmuir is due to the short platforms, considering a 6 coach 156 doesn't fit. Although a 7 coach set heading towards Glasgow might also foul the junction preventing a train departing towards Dumbarton from the Yoker lines.
Not to dig up a dormant thread, but 6-car 156 formations have been calling at Dalmuir for years with no issue (indeed, 1Y44 is enroute as I type this, albeit over a half-hour late). The Anniesland platforms can handle them but 7 cars is what clearly tips the balance in terms of signalling and rectifying it isn't really worth the expense, hence why the two aforementioned services skip Dalmuir.

In the mid seventies the Western Region used to operate 10 car( 1x4, 2x3 car) class 123 inter city units on commuter services to Henley on Thames in both the morning and evening peak hours. Too long for the platforms at Wargrave and Shiplake!
Never found a photo anywhere to nostalge in.

6 coach trains call there, but only the local door gets opened.

During Covid weren't there a bunch of Pacers (like 40 carriages or so) stored together on a heritage line? Might be mis-remembering.
Only if they went off lease. i can’t recall any operator using less rolling stock during the pandemic. It was just business as usual with some reduction in services and lots of fresh air initially.

I always answer these kinds of threads the same way.

In the 1983/84 timetable the 1734 Waterloo-Basingstoke and Alton was formed 6 x 2HAP, i.e. 6 units. Three units to each destination. I saw this twice and I believe a member of Woking platform staff showed me the station workings book and explained it was the normal allocation.

I wonder if we can beat 6 units on a public, non-ECS service? Some combination of 153s and other 15x/14x, for example?

Yes.
I was just browsing the winter 1964 Victoria Carriage Workings - on the Chatham side there were a few 10Hap (splitting en route) but to my surprise on the Central side the 1736 Brighton was formed 12Hap. Surprise because I didn't associate Haps with the Central at all back then.
No morning equivalent - maybe they worked to LBG?

From a similar era and going back to an earlier generation of unit, I can find a number of 12BIL (6 x 2BIL) workings in the 1967 post-Bournemouth-electrification Waterloo CWN (available on the BR Coaching Stock groups.io group).

These include, in the evening peak:

1726 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour
1750 Waterloo-Woking
1758 Waterloo-Alton, off 1626 Alton-Waterloo (4BIL from Alton, further 8BIL attached Farnham)

and in the morning:

0726 Alton-Waterloo, forms 0857 Alton out (down to Alton as 12BIL, then up to Farnham on 1026 as 12BIL; 8BIL detached Farnham)
0810 Haslemere-Waterloo

I can also find another 12HAP to add to the two above, which worked as a 12HAP through its entire journey, thus beating the two above for mileage:

0656 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo

1967 on the SWML was clearly where it was at for 6-unit workings! There are also 10BIL and 10HAP workings, too.

In fact - some used more than they had been intending to. Didn’t COVID give pacers an extra lease of life due to the need for social distancing?

I can’t really remember any extra units being used because of social distancing. There was very little need initially due to low passenger numbers. Northern I do recall were one of the very few who blocked off seats like bus companies did. The rest left it to common sense.

I’m not suggesting extra units were used, but that pacers were given a brief stay of execution. In other words, a reduction in capacity was delayed (not something one would really notice). Thinking about it though, maybe I’m getting my timings wrong - wasn’t the original PRM deadline 31/12/19, so they were already in a grace period.

Yes I think so. At GA we managed to accelerate the withdrawal of the legacy 90/DVT in early 2020 as the 745s took over a reduced timetable.

The 1st generation DMMUs were able to run with six power cars, so permitting 6 M+DT units in multiple: I assume that would have happened on occaision for excursions and the like, if not in everyday use.

On the Southern electric, I understand 4 4-COR was possible - though I don't know where it would fit in platforms. And I would expect 6 * 2-HAP (or predecessors) to have happened, at least on occaision.
And the 'Long Thin Drag' railtour used 2*6 car Hasting diesel units, with a power twin (2*DMBS) also in the formation, for a total of 14 cars.

When the south end of the WCML was closed, Virgin used 3*5 car class 221 units, total 15 cars for Birmingham-Euston via Oxford diversions.
I was on the Long Thin Drag Tour in 1986, what a great day, I boarded and alighted at Bromley South

Remember in the early days of the 142's there were diversions via the Atherton line of Manchester Vic to Chester/N Wales services, (reversing at Wigan NW) and seeing a 4 x 2 car 142 clatter past Crow Nest junction near Wigan. The term 'nodding donkeys' was so appropriate, looking at the 8 cars bounce up and down (and sideways)

5x2-Hap was generally used for the xx.36 semi-fasts from CX to Ramsgate via Woolwich Arsenal. Before the TLVs, boat trains in the early 60s were often formed with two MLVs and Cep Bep Cep. Typical of my trainspotting days at St Mary Cray around 1962-3.

In slam-door days it was not uncommon to see 12 car formations formed from six 2HAPs on the Waterloo main line - it wasn't scheduled, at least I don't think so, but sometimes happened.

The better Devon city
4 x 150 worked this yesterday evening:

Two units split at Plymouth.
This is a regular movement now which throws a bit of excitement into my Sunday evenings. Unfortunately the rear two sets are locked out of use. They first did it on 2nd June 2024 I believe. I have photos of that one somewhere

That makes sense with only five minutes at most at Plymouth to detach. Wouldn’t want to be hunting through the train for those not paying attention.
