Sorry but I, slightly, disagree with you.

For those of us living on very low incomes - in my case a pension - then all that matters is the total cost. Journey time doesn't enter into it.

I have been accused of complaining about the cost of the journey from Leicester to London which I find expensive. Especially when compared to, say, Chiltern railways Leamington Spa to London.

The cost per mile is of great significance to the poorer members of society. And it seems that having competition on any given route does reduce the prices.

I would argue that we should have competition on all routes, there is no reason why we cannot have two TOCs on the line from Leicester to London for example. They could run alternate trains or whatever. But competition on the whole reduces prices.

I get where you are coming fomr but as you have been told before our railways are not priced on the mileage they cover.

If your not worried about journey time you can always travel by coach.

We've been through this several times before and, if i remember correctly, given advice on ways to reduce the price from Leicester to London.

As has been explained numerous times, the railway is not the only way of getting somewhere. It is relatively comfortable and relatively quick, and so there is a price premium for that.

If total cost is all that counts then you can take the coach.

Comparing short-distance Anytime Day fares and long-distance intercity Anytime fares is completely meaningless.

Indeed. Virgin's peak time fares to/from Euston are undercut by LM, while Virgin's local fares for journeys in to Manchester undercut Northern. So you could attempt to make the conclusion Northern are more expensive than Virgin who are more expensive than LM by comparing Intercity and local fares.

PTE subsidies also make a big difference. A Northern flow like Knutsford to Delamere is more expensive than a lot of Southeastern flows, while a flow like Hale to Smithy Bridge (one side of the PTE boundary to another) looks dirt cheap compared to a lot of Southeastern flows.

Contact less fares in London are also very different to paper tickets valid on the same operators.

And London fares are horribly expensive if you look at Covent Garden to Leicester Square, but very cheap in comparison when much longer journeys are available at the same price or less - Epping to Hatton Cross being cheaper if a route avoiding Zone 1 is used!

Whilst I have some sympathy over rail prices in general, you are in a better position than many people here. As a pensioner you are, presumably, entitled to a Senior Railcard which saves 34% of the rail fare. As well as that you are entitled to a concessionary bus pass which would allow you to travel anywhere in England by bus at no cost - this actually also applies to many longer distances coach services as well as local bus services. So, if journey time really does not matter you do have other options. And these options are competition which is why train operating companies have a range of Advance fares at vastly reduced fares for those who plan in advance.

There is competition for Leicester to London journeys. Try National Express, they're much cheaper than the train and journey times aren't so bad.

But not of you wish to travel between South West Trains services and Southeastern services and book in advance. Then I believe you will find no advanced tickets.

Well you always get very short journeys, which hardly anyone would make by public transport, costing very high amounts in proportion to more sensible length journeys.

London has a model more similar to other major cities in Europe than other towns and cities in the UK. £6.50 unlimited public transport in zones 1 and 2 for the day is amazing value for money as is the £1.50 single bus fare - people in other parts of the country can pay over £5 for a single bus fare and if you have to change operators outside a PTE area then you pay a fortune.

Crosscountry surely. Their prices from North East to South West are horrendous. Probably comes from operating those Voyagers

Such comparisons will always depend on a strict set of criteria, and plain vanilla comparisons pretty meaningless.

I think we are done, as we have done this topic before, and if I remember correctly, the OP was previously advised that if she found EMT expensive, she had the option of going to Nuneaton and using XC Leicester - Nuneaton and LM Nuneaton - London, a route I used before myself, or use National Express, who charge under £25 return on the day (as I remember) and have a frequency of 60-90 minutes pretty much throughout the day, also an option I used before.
