most expensive route in physical distance

Planning to stop at Fort William over easter and wanted to take the train up to Inverness which is 68 miles or 2 hours by road

Try puting the journey in national rail website!!
longest is 15 hours and costs 101 pounds admitted you get a few hours overnight in Aberdeen

cheepest is 76 pounds and takes nearly 8 hours

I cant see that route used too often
Oh well will, have to use the car or bus then
just wondered if anyone has a similar journey that is relatively close by road but takes a day by rail

I wondered if this route was always like this or if any cuts had caused this journey to be untenable by rail
seesm starnge as the next big town to Fort Willimam is Inverness but then i guess there are other places in the Uk that have the same problem

It's inevitable where there's a "hub and spokes" system - away from the hub, two stations on the spokes can be very close without a connection.

Definitely suggest the bus - under 2 hours, at least every two hours £15.70 day return

Duno if you have done it already but the Leicester to Kettering run on March Sundays is worth doing this month on EMT as they run North out of Leicester and over the Oakham to Corby line via Haringworth viaduct due to posessions south of Leicester

I have just been looking at Bradshaws from the turn of the century to see waht lines wree removed and looks like there was some lines south that connected east to west giving a shorter distance from FW to InV. The two lines are not that far apart to the East of FW but loch Ranoch or loch Tay further south gets in the way!!

There was a line from Spean Bridge up to Fort Augustus, where you would catch a steamer up Loch Ness to Inverness, but it was never popular enough, and closed (I think) between the wars.

Yes. There was also the Callander and Oban line east from Crianlarich. You can still see the trackbed under Crianlarich viaduct.

In regards to the Ft. William to Inverness route it is a real pity that they never went ahead with building the proposed route from Tulloch via Loch Laggan to join the H.R. to the north of Dalwhinnie station. An hourly service was proposed. I still think that would be a worth while project in today's climate.

It might be worth speaking to the WHR, then building the line 2ft gauge with a steam service in the summer and a DMU-type service in the winter (if at all). The real ideal would be a tramway through Fort William, enabling a service all the way from Oban to Inverness. It doesn't need to be particularly fast, but would be good as a mainly tourist route with some sort of service that the locals could use.

I seem to remember coming up with something similar for Orkney. Stromness-Kirkwall, with connections to the airport and ferry terminal at Kirkwall. Mainland being nice and flat for the most part means that it would not be too difficult to build, and there are of course plenty of tourists.
