Hi all

Here is one for you, what is the largest number of locomotives that singularly or in multiple have hauled one single service train (not a railtour) that you have travelled on. I have had a couple of threes and one memorable four!

The threes were on the SO Glasgow to Scarboroughs, where on one train I had a 26 from Glasgow to Edinburgh, a 46 from Edinburgh to York and a 31 from York to Scarborough.

The memorable "four" was the 1V98 Glasgow Central to London Paddington on Sunday 4th Septamebr 1983. Haulage was..
47436 - Glasgow to Carlisle via Kilmarnock
87019 - Carlisle to Preston
40133 (87019 drag) Preston to Crewe via Manchester
87019 Crewe to Birmingham
50008 Birmingham to Paddington

I am sure someone can beat it - any takers

Jim

I wasn't on it, but this might come close (courtesy of http://www.timewarp.abelgratis.com/89/1t0789.html)

1T08 09:35 Blythe Bridge - Blackpool additional, 26/06/89

  • 20173+20065 Set off from Derby with the ECS (8xVB mkIs) but 20173 failed en-route.
  • 20117+20006 sent from Stoke to assist but unable due to isolated train VB equipment. 20065 continues to Stoke alone.
  • Upon arrival at Stoke 20132+20133 provided. By this time however, a steel train hauled by 37069 has derailed blocking the line between Stoke and Etruria resulting in diversion via Stafford.
  • Upon arrival at Crewe the 20s were failed with a defective horn. Crewe provides 37714 but refused by driver.
  • Crewe provides 47439 which works forward and return!

On a train somewhere in Europe
EC173 0640 Hamburg Hbf to Wien Südbf in August 2007

101 031 Hamburg Hbf to Dresden Hbf
371 004 Dresden Hbf to Praha-Holesovice
122 026 Praha to Holesovice to Kolín
742 173 Kolín to Kutná Hora hlavní nradrazni
230 027 Kutná Hora hlavní nradrazni to Breclav
1116 153 Breclav to Wien Südbf Ost (EC105)

Cheating a little as we had an extra two locos due to being diverted over a non-electrified line and the train was terminated at Breclav due to late running, but we would still have had another loco from there had EC173 continued into Austria.
