The Barnstaple branch drags on a bit as well.

Have to agree with you there, although I suspect that most people on here would class their local regular lines as a bit dull/samey. Even the Dawlish Sea Wall for me loses a little bit of its charm when you use it often. That said, I do find the hour plus trip to Exeter a lot more bearable now the 142's are gone! :p

Anything out of Victoria and Waterloo through those dreary South London suburbs. My nightmares of hell involve being on a so called fast train that stop starts it's way through what must be the most depressing part of Britain.

I found the Cumbrian Coast quite boring when I did Ulverston - Carlisle via Barrow on a 156.

But the winner is the East Suffolk Line. 55mph, slowing down to 30mph for every level crossing (of which there are a lot), and a 170 which quite frankly on a line like that is about as quick as a snail.

Whilst I agree that this can be a bit dull, I think this is one section where the number of different stops, trying to predict how busy/empty the train will be after any given station (I can never seem to fathom it!) just about saves this journey. There's also some nice scenery in the Derby to Sheffield stretch, which helps!
It's just the Sheffield to Doncaster/Wakefield section that I'm not keen on. I quite like the rest of the journey. :)

Birmingham-Wolverhampton

abandonned factories, empty canals, the M5 going overhead.
While it would seem to fall into all the same traps that make me dislike the run from Sheffield to Doncaster, I don't mind the stretch between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. It sums up the overwhelming grimness of the Black Country quite appropriately. ;) Then again, the Sheffield to Doncaster run could be said to do the same for South Yorkshire...

It must be down to the fact that, as I said, the Sheffield to Doncaster bit is usually in the middle of a long journey, whereas Birmingham to Wolverhampton usually falls at the start or as a short trip.

How much of the beauty of York can you see from the train? The southern and northern approaches a just dull suburbia!Yes, they are there, but you could hardly be said to be close enough to get anything of the true beauty of either area. You are in the vale of York, as flat and dull for miles in every direction as any of East Anglia.

Two spectacular and brief moments, I grant you, but still very brief, and little to grab the attention between them

Which these days contain little but rusting, disused wagons and overgrown undergrowth,

Even those are pale shadows of what they were even ten years ago. I suppose, in terms of bustle, the same is true of most of the network. But I still maintain that the physical geography of the ECML is more homogeneous throughout than any other main line
Each to their own then, we'll have to agree to disagree. The ECML from Doncaster northwards still holds my attention, in all of what I perceive as it's many variations.

I should have thought of that. The entire Cross City period is dull.

King's Norton to New Street on XC is also very boring as it's usually very slow.
Oi! Leave the Cross City line alone you lot! ;) I find the run into Birmingham up to Five Ways from Bourneville quite pleasant, both on local and long distance trains, with the run alongside the Birmingham & Worcester canal and a few "green bits" around University. South from Kings Norton even the 323s get the opportunity for some decent stretches of high speed running. Lichfield to Sutton Coldfield isn't too bad either. Admittedly there's not much going on between New Street and Sutton Coldfield, but the regular start stop nature of the Cross City service at least breaks up the journey a bit. And the line passes under that marvel of brutalist engineering design, Spaghetti Junction! ;)

A boring line with boring trains... sums up the Cross City pretty well ;)

(I know you like it and 323s; I'm just teasing :p)

If Centro ever need a new marketing director, I don't think you're going to be first in line for the job with tag lines like that. ;):p

No, but if said it about TfGM [they run 323s too remember!] it might make Merseytravel look favourably upon me

One that I don't think has been said. Oxford - Bristol via Bath. I found it really dull and uninspiring. I also agree with Oswyntail, the ECML is really spectacularly dull. And I mean all of it!

Someone said earlier the more you travel over a line, the more you dislike it. I travel the WCML between Crewe and Milton Keynes most frequently and I with the exception of the immediate vicinities of Kilsby and Shugborough, it remains a pictorial delight.

How about Stourbridge Jn - Stourbridge Town? The most interesting part of which is probably the use of a PPM instead of a 15x.

Cheers,

Barry

You arent on the train long enough to get bored. Plus you get to see a fixed distant, which is quite an unusual sight on the railway isnt it?

You mean the scenery, or trundling along in a 165? From Box Tunnel through Bath to Bristol is very picturescque.

The scenery. I was on an HST which is even worse ;) I like my DMUs to have a motor/engine underneath each car, rather than just one at each end.

In the UK, a lot of the old southern network in Kent and Sussex doesn't thrill me- mile upon mile of line in cuttings with occasional glimpses of identikit commuter towns with lookalike houses and lookalike business/retail parks leading to graffiti scarred south London slums before thankfully reaching the capital! All done on soulless and often overcrowded plastic EMUs.

and yes, that paragraph was intentionally long and dull ;)

Abroad the crappest journey i've ever done was in the Netherlands from Amersfoort to Groningen- nothing- and I mean absolutely nothing- to look at for the whole journey in 1st class on an ICM unit with no catering and no fellow passengers. Zzzzz.

Stafford - Nuneaton is good napping territory....

Nothing beats the Central line from West Ruislip to White City for tedium.

Keep running, and don't look or come back!

Nowt wrong with the GWML around here. OK, so it goes through Swindon. Fine. But there's plenty else to see; Didcot power station area, plenty of countryside, Chippenham viaduct, the Box tunnel, the appraoches to Temple Meads - and of course Bath.

For the noise/vibration? :o Plus, a HST isn't a DMU!

Personally, I find the ECML more interesting than the WCML (especially south of Preston!), but that's probably because I don't travel on it very often, Edinburgh - Newcastle being my favourite section.

It's difficult for me to say. Either Exeter - Salisbury or Southampton - Portsmouth. Both slow and too many stops.

There are lines that would bore me to death if I did it too often. I agree with others about South Coastaway lines and Barnataple line.

I guess a line you do all the one can get boring (I get really bored between Plymouth and Totnes even though the views are stunning on the edges of the moors and viaducts). But lines like the ecml have yards which could generate interest and there seems like more to see for an enthausiast.

True - Add that to the list as well! Along with my earlier suggestion of The Wherry Lines - Some on here thaught the Somerset levels were uninteresting (which granted, there not the most scenic) but the Wherry Lines really take it for me...Marsh land, Marsh Land, Marsh Land, River, Marsh Land, Marsh Land, Marsh land...Over some of the worst track in the country, and if your lucky, you can even find a leaky 153 were the windows are so filthy and coverd in dirt - you don't have much of a chance to look at the so called view!

Thanks to all the posters who have voted for the ECML....I've treated myself to a EC cheap fare from Kings X - Aberdeen at the end of Feb and was looking forward to it until now!! Seriously, I think I will enjoy it as I used to live on the southern section and have not done any serious mileage on the route since the late 1970's...presumably the sea - side is the best side to sit on?

My most boring line - anywhere in the dark!

Slow, yes, but Southampton-Portmsouth is quite interesting for views of the docks at Southampton, the Hamble at Bursledon, and one or two other things, I'm sure. They really need a higher speed line in from Cosham, though, I do agree.

Don't listen to the nay sayers, north of Newcastle the ECML is quite interesting (some sections are very close to the sea) and the sweeps over the viaducts approaching Durham and Berwick are equally nice as are the bridges over the Tyne entering Newcastle.

South of Newcastle I do find it to be less interesting (but that is in part due to my own over familiarity with that part of the route). But I wouldn't say that to someone who hasn't ever done it or hasn't done for some time that the route is boring.

As for me the most boring line is Cottingham - Hull and Longbeck - Darlington as I'm far far too familiar with those lines for them to hold any interest anymore.

I've had a good go at defending the case of the ECML! :) Yes, I'd definitely say that the seaward (east) side of the train is the best to sit on.

It has to be said, when travelling between Leeds/Wakefield and London I do tend to prefer the Midland Mainline for reasons of scenery and not just the comfortable traditional Inter-City 125 seating.

Comfy seat, daylight, clean window, train not stopping and starting for inexplicible reasons: not boring wherever you are.

Have to say I do quite like the Wherry Lines, although it helps to have a 156 as the seats are properly aligned with the windows, and they're cleaner too.

For me, the southern half of the ECML. Sure there's countryside, but it's baron and flat. And when it's not, it's lined with industrial estates and retail parks.

Bicester Town to Oxford takes some beating for sheer dullness. Almost dead straight, mostly hemmed in by tall hedges and very slow.

Oh, I thought that was quite picturesque and rural ! Mind you, I've only been on it once so I can imagine it would be quite an uninspiring commute ;)
