Most beautiful stations

Thinking a bit harder I'd go with Hellifield on the top twenty for how grand the awning is for a station in a fairly remote location like it is. It's so photogenic and maybe one day it gets a branching service to Blackburn and Manchester.

It has some interesting heritage bits but to say it is beautiful is stretching one's imagination.

Betws-y-coed isn't bad but its really retail and dining emporium with a once good but now decaying railway museum.

One I didn't include in my suggestions earlier was Liskeard - that is a nice station. The main building has been tastefully modernised whilst the Looe Platform 3 has been restored to heritage railway standards with an interesting visitor centre in the waiting room usually open during staffed station hours with interpretation displays etc.

I won't tolerate Betws slander, it's a beautifully maintained station with real character. Yeah sure the museum needs some love, but it's all round a great station. Give me that over Pokesdown any day.

A few other honourable mentions that I've been to. I'm sure they've been mentioned, but I'd like to mention them again!

• A lot of the stations on the Mid-Cheshire line are wonderfully kept, particularly Hale, Mouldsworth and Delamere. Although not on this line, I saw Helsby mentioned too, and wholeheartedly agree.
• Station itself maybe not, but for scenery, stations like Roman Bridge, Corrour, Achnasheen, are all amazing.
• Going back to pretty architecture, Knaresborough is a beauty. Same goes for New Mills Central.
• But for me, the crown would have to be between Corfe Castle or Hebden Bridge. Both are gorgeous, beautifully maintained, and in a stunning location. I'd probably have to give it to Hebden Bridge, simply as I've used it more (I've only been to Corfe Castle once and many years ago at that too). Hebden Bridge very much is the crown jewel in the beautiful Calderdale line, in which so many stations are lovely.

I'm biased towards the North of England, Wales and Scotland, as these are the areas I've lived my life in thus far. However, as others have pointed out, Liverpool Street, St Pancras, etc in London I've enjoyed. I've also used Hertford East, which I found rather pleasant. So yeah, that's my take.

That's fair, I do agree to Betws being a lot "more" than just a railway station these days, and you're right in the sense that were the Conwy Valley to shut, it'd still maintain some of its attraction and charm. However, at the end of the day, I still view it as a station at core, and a beautiful one at that too!

I really like Helsby on the Chester to Runcorn line as an out there choice.

Working semaphore signal box on the island platform, beautiful stone build buildings and the view of the sandstone outcrop that overlooks the village is splendid. (Just don't look the other way)

Yes Helsby is nice, as too is Mouldsworth. I like Marylebone, don't think that was on the list. I also think Liverpool Lime Street is pretty nice, always seems airy .

It did say prettiest tube station. (Which the bit of Earl’s Court being referred to isn’t, of course. Only the Piccadilly Line platforms are that!

I remember decades ago travelling the Settle & Carlisle line towards Leeds and coming into Hellifield. I assumed Hellifield must be a big town because the station was so grand! I haven't been back since but from various YouTube videos I get the impression the station is now a bit decrepit and in need of refurbishment and re-decoration.

Hmmm. I agree for the most part that Lancaster is lovely station but I witnessed a "one under" there decades ago and I still have some clear images in my memory bank, so my enthusiasm will always be muted.

It's quite nicely looked after now. One can even visit the cafe !

Yes, I noticed that about Norwich. It's not even vaguely close to being true as Victoria was about 3/4 mile away and City about 1 mile.

Such a shame really, I think having three stations in Norwich would give it extra interest and character (but it's not financially sensible or convenient for passengers changing, of course!)

Victoria was more convenient for the city centre I would think but one station is easier operationally.

I've been thinking of they extended the Breakland line round via the UEA/science park and on to costessey / dereham would be a useful shuttle

Barnstaple (formerly Junction) is a fine station, retaining architectural merit while well and efficiently adapted to 'reduced circumstances'.

Before I get my coat, can I insist it's a beautiful marriage of form and function. Bright, square-set, with handsome stonework and spectacular lattice ironwork. Love the Victorian confidence and the bonkers overengineering for the purpose it serves. Imagine the grim and mean effort that would be knocked up today in its place...
Shame that the trains are dull and it's full of Neds.

Absolutely. Stumbled across it by accident, previously would have picked Great Malvern but Helsby ticks a lot of boxes for me.

I’d like to nominate a couple:

My favorite line is the Heart of Wales. Walked through the hills the other day and ended up at Llangammarch. What a beautiful little halt. I had two and a half hours before my train, and I noticed a local resident tending to the myriad flowers that occupy the platform.

Also would to like to give a shout out to Meols, relatively local to me. The local residents really take care of the garden and the staff keep the station tidy.
