Morecambe to Bolton season ticket question

My son is buying a 3 monthly season ticket to cover Morecambe to Bolton to get to uni on a daily basis, can he use it between stations for example Bare Lane to Preston or or does he have to complete a full journey the ticket covers every time he uses it?
Lancaster & Preston are both non ticket barrier stations.

Also what would be the permitted routes he could use ?

Your son can use his ticket at Any Station.between Morecambe and Bolton. Providing he is on a Valid Route.
