More Train telly(Television)

Folks,
Here is my Saturday morning rant.There are plenty of Railway magazines on the market covering a wide range of the spectrum.My issue is the lack of tv programes that are available.

l have Sky TV.Anyone who has this service will know that there are about a trillion channels.Some good,the majority tho are utter Sh*t.

If sky tv can show Advert channels,God channels,The african Eastenders,Home&away,neighbours channel the domino channel,the dog channel,the horse channel,pub channel,the motorway channel,folks l could go on and on.........Why don't the TOC's make a programe.l think there would be a market for it.

Anyone agree?

There was Bahn TV on Astra 1 (old Sky Analogue position) - however it closed a few years back and is now a Tart on Sofa channel.

Rail is a bit of a niche market, though you might be able to make it work if you followed the Revision3 model of video podcasts downloaded on request. Also means you don't have to fill 24 hours with content.

BTW Sky are no-longer accepting applications for new SD channels as the older boxes have reached the limit of channels they can hold in their memory. So only way is to buy an existing channel and EPG numbers are changing hands for millions!

there have been a number of Railway related shows over the past 10 years...
fair enough most of those have been like railway walks, or that other one on the BBC where the host travels along lines and talks about the development of the towns and citys along the way.

there was a show still going back about 10 years on iirc the discovery channel... lasted 2 seasons and finished... each show was a mish mash of short features about different railway events, engines etc..

then one of the hosts went solo and started workign for that railway DVD monthly that started out about the time of the railfest 200 event at York NRM...


the problem i think with railwy programming is how to you cater to everyones tastes... not everyone likes steam locos, others dont like units, and some dont like certain types ie. Diesel Electric vs Diesel Hydraulic vs. AC locomotives desipite many others liking them...
even if they could do something... how do you split the show or chanel so that eveyone is happy with what is being provided...

The simple answer is that you have something on the channel to everyone's taste much as happens on the BBC/ITV/Sky channels anyway. That means you have a show on Steam trains, a show about different train routes and how they were built etc.........
