Why is there a 180-second time lag between the ability to send PMs? I can understand a small lag, as with posts, to prevent sending the same message twice, but I have just had PM conversations with four different members and have been struggling to reply because of the lag! Given I can usually think of and type a response quite quickly, it does get annoying to click SEND after writing 10 or more lines of text, only to be told "please try again in 80 seconds"...

Maybe you need to remember this is a FORUM. There are plenty of other programs designed for having personal 'conversations'.

I know, but it all relates to railways and/or forum matters! Within five minutes of each other, I had a list from Mojo, an offer of help from MattE, and a question from NeilAH - while also examining a tip from 4SRKT which brought me on this evening in the first place. Given I can easily contact only two of those off this forum, this becomes my primary means of contact with them.

I ask too much don't I?

The limit on PMs is in order to prevent mass Spamming and abuse of the PM system. Obviously it is quite rare to send/receive so many PMs at a time so I hope this is not too much of an issue. Obviously it is unfortunate that you could not have done what you would have liked to do, but I hope you understand the reason for it. After all 180 seconds is only three minutes.

If this is a problem that affects a large number of users on a regular basis (which I don't think it is) then I can do something about this by creating a separate Usergroup for members who request it.

Yes. We have several thousand members, and there's only one who ever has a problem.

Ouch. That was very very harsh and probably very untrue.
In fact, very untrue, because i have come a cropper with the 3 min ruling as well, and it is annoying. I just dont say anything though.

With answers like that, I would start to wonder what the point is of asking questions of the mods. This forum shows itself to be democratic and open, and willing to listen, but then we see a comment like this from one of the mods.
Thankfully Mojo gave a fair answer.

3 minutes between PMs does seem excessive, surely 1 minute would be enough to deter spamming? Even the 30 second search wait can get frustrating (especially with the dreaded double tap on new posts). That being said I'm really moaning for moaning's sake since it doesn't affect me all that often ;)

Oh tell me about that! That's always really irritating when that happens!

Though yes I am sort of moaning for the sake of moaning ;)

Don't even get me started on that double tap thing. I am probably more suspectible to that than 95+% of this forum, especially given I have to use the mousepad for the press given my mouse buttons on my laptop have become worn through over-use and I prefer to not use a mouse for a laptop, given I can use my thumbs to move the mouse whilst keeping my fingers above the keyboard. For the most part, the search wait is annoying, but if every search attempted is saved then by not having it you run the risk of blowing your entire budget on it alone, so I can understand it.

Back to PMs, I honestly believe a 60 second lag would be better. I know that I am the primary "complainant" with this kind of thing, but I guess my nature has developed in such a way over the last couple of years that if something is not right I will aim to correct it. In March for instance, I made two complaints to First S&A at once!

Maybe we should consider Mojo's point? Although I would suggest that you have to provide evidence that such a tool would be necessary in order for him and the team to accept that you have a need for it, so it would have to be request/invitation only (as with the private forums).

I though this thread was about David Cameron!

Why would I be complaining about David Cameron? I am a Tory-supporter and prospective member, after all!

Perhaps you were in favour of AV, and didn't like his 'No' campaigning? Maybe you feel he could cut more public spending? There must be something about him you find annoying!

Far from it ;)

I had a go at my Dad because he voted yes!

I do feel that the cuts are not as well organised as they could be, but that's it.

Can I just throw in my hat for the 3-minutes-is-too-long team? I have fallen foul of this a few times recently, particularly coordinating the [see signature].

Also, on the subject of Cameron....

Maybe if this was a forum that you paid to use I could understand some of the complaints re PMs.

This forum does allow you to add Instant Messaging into your profile and if you don't want to publicly share it, you can PM the details to other members. Or use Facebook?

Done and done. And I mean done.

I don't have many people on here on Facebook though. Only about five in all. I don't actually go on it all that often. But I do have MSN and Skype links in my profile. But that's not really the point; NeilAH aside I very rarely receive PMs on here from people I have on any of the above media.
