I'm so glad I don't commute anywhere along the GEML. About a third of the time I'm in Norwich station there's delays of one sort or another between there and London and there's a perpetually grumpy group of commuters who sit on the 1936 with me who commute from London on the 1730 who always have one complaint or another.

Anyway; today. Too windy so the trees were touching the overhead wires between Norwich and Diss and so some rather shabby coaches were drafted in to ferry the passengers. I have sympathy, there's not much they can do about their ageing infrastructure but ... it is a bit of a joke.

Have you seen the damage a tree can do ? There is one answer, cut all the tress down, and cut back all the vegitation, but that would, and does upset the tree huggers!:roll:

steam days that used to be the case (fire risk etc.) now people moan about trees being cut down, then moan when one falls on the line when its windy (or leaves etc etc) never happy, you move next to a railway expect to deal with whatever happens simples

Hi, Any Permitted I was stuck in that delay for ever yesterday around 13:00 I was hoping to board the 13:29 to London Liverpool Street to Alight at Chelmsford and was delayed for about 35 to 40 minutes so I will be claiming compensation for the matter and a guy on the train who I sat with said it had been delayed for over 3 hours up in Norwich.

It was a tree from a neighbour's land, fell right across the OLE, threatened to bring the wires down. Thankfully it was recovered in time.

Not much the railway can do about such incidents other than sue the neighbour for damages, and you can imagine the headlines if this was done.

I think that you will find this to have been a problem since the days railways first ran.

swills makes a very valid point in his reply and I have seen many embankments being cleared by the railway companies in the very many years that I have used rail travel.
