tomorrow I have an Anytime Single from manchester Airport to Newark Northgate which cost £28. This is routed via Leeds.

However, an Anytime Single from Leeds to Newark Northgate is £31 with an Off Peak priced at £28.30

 For anyone planning on travelling to Newark via Leeds, a Manchester Piccadilly to Newark Stations Anytime Single ticket is even cheaper at £24.50.

Thankfully there are many fares prices from Manchester to East Coast by EMT courtesy of the Liverpool- Norwich service of course! However, the quickest way is usually via TPE & NXEC. The Leeds - Newark fares would be priced by NXEC and are thus much more expensive! Thank god XC didn't get LIV - NOR

I rarely use single tickets but I have always found return tickets from Newark Northgate when travelling north for relatively short distances rediculously priced and therefore never use that route. Even Day returns and Off peak returns are totally over the top.
For example even a relatively local journry to Doncaster is £17 for a Day Return. Wakefield and Leeds are both £28.80 although for some strange reason York is lower priced at £25.50.

It isn't just Newark but the East Midlands in general that has these high prices on relatively short journeys up into Yorkshire as fares are just as bad from Nottingham even travelling via Sheffield.
From Nottingham the cheapest returns are Leeds at £28.10, Wakefield at £22.70, Doncaster at £20.80 and York at £35.50.
All of these can be reduced by splitting at Sheffield.
I am quite surprised that Northern, with their new Leeds-Nottingham service, have not found a way of offerering some cheaper Day Returns between Nottingham and Leeds to attract passengers.

If I am going from Nottingham to Leeds, Bradford, Halifax or anywhere else in that area I just get a Day Return to somewhere like Rochdale or Oldham which is only £18 and is surprisingly valid via Leeds as well as the more direct route via Manchester.

Living in central Nottinghamshire I also regularly drive to Chesterfield to make journeys to these destinations rather than use Nottingham or Newark because fares from Chesterfield to these destinations are about half the above prices.

The basic idea is that if you are going to W Yorks buy a ticket to Lancs, then the fare is set by EMT and not NXEC!

I notice that a £19 off peak Day Return is now available form Nottingham to Leeds via Sheffield. I don't know when this was introduced.

The other day I was at Birmingham New Street early Evening wanting get home to Nuneaton after a day out using a West Mids Day Ranger.

I've been meaning to see what First Class is like on Arriva CrossCountry and I expected the BHM to Stansted train to be packed so in my infinite wisdom I decided to buy a First Anytime Day Single from BHM to NUN as I knew it was the only way I could get a seat. I prefer to be seated as I have health problems which make standing uncomfortable, but not impossible.

The train as expected was jammed pack with at least 6 to 8 people standing by the doors. I found a seat in FC with two other people only to be joined by a group of other people on standard tickets who physically couldn't find room to even as much as stand elsewhere on the train.

Needless to say I needn't have spent £16.00 on the ticket and just used my WMDR.

Am I alone in thinking for the distance £16.00 for a single, even First Class, to be expensive as the return is £8 something I think in standard.

Steve.
