I applied over a year ago to first scotrail and was unsuccessful at the online application stage, as I would really love a job driving trains is there anywhere I could go to read up on the type of scenarios they are asking about also is it any easier getting a job as a freight train driver as opposed to a passenger train also I have an ADR certificate for HGV tanker driving does this certificate mean any more cash to a freight driver.

No. Generally there are more vacancies on the passenger side though as there more passenger train drivers.

As in, more pay? No. You'd get paid whatever the rest of the grade get paid.

I wouldn't say it is easier to get a freight drivers job than a passenger one. I don't think it's as popular because a lot is night work. Based on what I've heard it's a bit like flying. Ask anyone whether or not they would want to fly passengers or freight and most would go for passenger because it's seen as more glamorous so I would think that would apply to rail too.

As far as the ADR is concerned I doubt it would make any difference because it's a road transport qualification, not a rail one. It's certainly worth mentioning but I don't think it would make any difference to pay.

This bit made me laugh, yep its glamorous on the Kingston rounders and driving 455s allright!
Most peoples perceptions of train driving is the crack Expresses cruising along at 100mph, where as in reality it is suburban stock with over 100 stops a shift.

Unless you are a spotter and then it's DRS or nothing

DRS and Colas Rail are the companies to aim for if you want the most glamour.

You'll get to thrash some proper engines and you'll have a large audience as well as most rail fans turn out for the 37's and 56's.
