60's won't die out for a long time yet.. they are too much of a good work horse if DB let them go then like already mentioned i can see DRS taking them personally.

Hmm wonder how they would make the livery work on that ;)

Well ladies and gentlemen it has been announced in Rail by Keith Heller that DBS intend to have all 100 class 60 locomotives stored until the recession backs off and their traffic levels return to a steady level.
And also they intend to store 23% of the company's wagons at various sites which he says the company are fortunate to have.
But also jobs will be lost in the areas effected by the recession so various steel and petroleum sites and finally more land will be sold off in this year.

If you are wondering why the class 60's it is basically cost cutting which is to combat the traffic being lost to the current economic climate and when the profits go up so will the class 60's.

I honestly think they will be back as at the beginning of each year the levels of class 60's go dramatically down this year is just particularly bad.

They're aiming to get rid of ALL of them!!! Even 074 and 040 which is surpising. Blame the recession (according to wnxx). Only 15 to go.......

I am wondering if db schenker have a traction policy of any sort. They now have ops throughout Europe and surely 20 year old class 60's must have a future somewhere. there is also the issue of the possible massive high -speed rail developments in the Uk which will lead to a quantum leap in demand for freight locomotives. I find it amazing that EWS is achieving a turnover of 600 million quid or so with basically 300 active locos - especially with 50 class 66's in France as well. Shows how efficient ops have become. Freightliner's figures are even more impressive! Anyway I digress - my point is that with DBS's current disposals policy the class 60's will soon become their only viable reserve and so there must be a future for some of the class when traffic picks up.

The actual reason of why the 60s is as follows; the 60s are owned whereas the 66s are leased and have to be paid for regardless of whether they are being used or not. Therefore makes good business sense to maximise the use of what has to be paid for in any event while cutting the unnecessary (at the moment) additional cost of maintaining the 60s when traffic levels do not justify it - especially seeing a they require such heavy and expensive maintenance at the present time. Total elimination of the fleet is still some way off though...

Any chance of it happening before March so can have more turns for more interesting locos out at Nene Valley and Mid Norfolk instead??

Fair enough thats a good reason also to be fair I read an interview in rail magazine and Keith Heller did not mention the whole leasing owning issue he basically stated what I have mentioned but then again I should actually remember these things cheers for the clarity somebody needs to give me some :D
If the do eliminate the fleet it wqill be quite strange knowing there are no tugs about considering there staple traction down my part of the world (and most others).

Last week I saw 60084 Cross Fell on a bitumen tank working to Preston at Blackburn, she was the first class 60 I have seen round these parts for quite a while.
