Yesterday four of us took a train journey from Wolverhampton to Birmingham. Two of us with valid tickets (one of them being me), the other two not travelling on valid tickets as one was using a day ticket dated for the day before, and the other using a ticket that didn't cover the zone we were travelling from.
The two of us with the valid tickets made it plainly clear (and within earshot of other passengers) that we didn't approve, but our friends said they didn't care and carried on regardless, their point being they never get checked anyway. We weren't going to fall out over it so we left it at that.
We didn't get ticket checked on the train as it was a busy CrossCountry service, and my friend with the incorrectly dated ticket even got through the manual barriers at New Street, and managed to use it on a bus too. The friend travelling out of zone has regularly done so before, and also travelled with us to Liverpool and back without scratching the date off a complimentary LM day ticket, so he could get another use out of it (again, wasn't checked at all in either direction).
Part of me wanted them to both get caught out... and if they carry on doing this, one day they will be (as I told them)... but what would you do? Also, by travelling with them, could we be implicated in any action despite ourselves travelling on valid tickets?
