I have recently been focussing on the metre-gauge lines that served Kampala and Uganda from the East African coast at Mombasa. While doing research on the route of the line out of Mombasa, I came across photographs and, in particular, old postcards that showed traces of a tramway or trolleyway in the streets of Mombasa in the late nineteenth century. It needed more research and the linked article is the result:

Really interesting. I find there's something strangely fascinating about minimalist railways like this one, which didn't even have the sophistication of horse power, though I pity the poor sods who actually had to provide the human power in the noonday heat. A bit like the hand-pushed pier railways and similar ventures.

I love the idea of a 'hierarchy' determining whose trolley had to be lifted off the rails. I wonder what they did if two people of equal status met?
