The MOM roles are a great role. They are the railways first line operations response to incidents ranging from bridge strikes, points failures, and broken rails, to trespass and fatalities.
It is very hard to describe accurately though without knowing where your're interested in working as where they are based makes a huge difference to the role. I have worked across multiple routes and locations in NR and can see the differences. I was a MOM in rural Wales, so my role was more about crossing missuse, animal incursions, bridge strikes, and supervising the signal boxes on my patch (deputy LOM duties)- ordering/deliverying stores, undertaking box visits, assessments, fire safety etc, whereas a MOM in an urban environment will deal with more trespass and fatalities.
MOM's have many competencies under their belt, such as Railway Incident Officer, Points Operator, Bridge strike nomiee, PILOTman, broken rail nominee etc
MOM's are usually signalling grade 6 or 7 depending on location, and again, overtime will vary depending on location. For me in rural Wales there was little and we worked 9hr days and then covered overnight on an on-call basis (which attracted an on-call premium) and now where I work in the midlands the MOM's are rostered 24/7.
Overall, the MOM role is varied and interesting and definitely worth a look.
Hope this helps, if you want to know anything else just shout.
