Early diesels wore various combinations of brunswick green and/or sherwood green and/or pale grey cheat lines of varied position and thickness.

Why was there no standardised paint job?

at a guess, the effects of nationalisation and even inter-war grouping were still to some extent resisted, so where there was less emphasis or enforcement of corporate image (which BR took a fair while to fully develop anyway) there was variation.

I believe that the BRB design panel were responsible for choosing the two-tone green colour schemes that adorned the likes of the class 25s, 47s and Deltics, and also for introducing the pale grey lining bands. This was in an attempt to make the new diesel locos look more attractive, less drab and less box-like. The Design Panel altered the standard scheme to be sympathetic to the shape and style of the different classes involved.
