Modern trains on heritage railways

The only times I've heard of this happening are:

15001 on the SVR
158725 on the Bo'ness and Kinniel (staff training)
DRS 66 on Bo'ness and Kinniel

If anyone has any other information, pictures and/or videos of modern trains on heritage railways, please help me advance my list.

There've been a few Voyagers that have made it onto preserved lines when they were originally named by Virgin: If I remember correctly, 220002 was on the Bo'ness and Kinneil when it was named "Forth Voyager".

A pair of ATN 153s, 153328 and 153351, also operated a Grosmont to Goathland shuttle service on the NYMR during the 2003 diesel gala. Also present at the same gala was Freightliners' then newest "shed", 66566 (Present on the photo I have attached), and Virgins' 57306.

There have been a heck of a lot of new locos that have attended diesel galas over the years, but not so much in the way of units as far as I am aware. The West Somerset Railway even ran it's very own HST when a number of ex-Virgin power cars and mark 3 trailers were stored there!

I know the GCR has had several EWS 66s, a DRS 57, a Freightliner 57, 43089 with some trailers and 43160, a Parry People Mover, various wagons of the Freightliner and hopper variety, plus some others.

SVR has also had a Chiltern 168.

158851 visited the East Lancs for some form of testing a few years back; if you're counting locos, more recently it's had DBS 66s and 59s bringing in stuff for the Metrolink Bury line track renewals as well as 67s on railtours.

It was the "Drags and Rescues" weekend where an EMT HST (With 43082) ran through to the Mid-Norfolk Railway.

I count anything from 56s onwards as "modern", which raises a few issues in terms of this thread as several are now formally preserved! In many cases, examples of the modern locos and units being referred to on this thread will no doubt be preserved in the future too.

Can't remember which one, but a class 450 EMU (possible 012?) spent a while at Ropley on the Mid Hants Railway for staff training / testing purposes.

Obviously there is no third rail, so it had a class 47 to provide electric power so that its electrical systems could be powered. I assume that the power provided by the 47 never permitted it to move.

When I find time I will post the pictures that I have.

Ignoring any workings on Diesel Gala events the NYMR regularly has visits from diesel units such as 153 and 156 for driver training purposes.
Generally for driving on gradients with greasy rails.
66s have also visited for commercial purposes with a scrap train running in the early 90s and most recently the delivery of the new bridge 30 beams and Kirow crane and the later removal of the old bridge beams for scrap.

The Weardale Railway has been carrying main line trains for both stone and coal.

THe Ecclesbourne Valley Railway has carried various LUL vehicles. Also sundry OTMs under test by their manufacturers.

A bit of an oddball really: when a Chiltern Railways Bubble Car visits the SVR (at the same time as 150001). It's old but yet it's still in use.

God that awful thing! Having had the experiance of travelling in it last year, i think it's fair to say that it's one experiance i shan't be aiming for again! All i can sum it up with is...BRITISH LEYLAND... The interior metalwork holding the glass partitions had become rusty, with two of the upper holdings so far gone that the glass panel was pretty hairly, flapping about! Then there's the pretty tempremental gearbox and Leyland T11 Engine, which having struggled around the triangle, made me wonder how the heck it was going to get back to Downpatrick! Needless to say that after some Leyland T11 Thrashing, it made it back...at walking pace!

Ah yes, now that i remember - Originally, the plan was to use 33018 Repainted into SWT Desiro livery, but for some reason - potentially the power reason, a hired in EWS 47 was used instead...

And of course, over the years there's been the various loco hauled engineers trains onto the West Somerset railway - such as the stone delivery at Blue Anchor, as well as the Network Rail Test Sets, Every year or so there’s usually a track and plant event on the Mid Hants railway too...

As well as the Class 175 Fleet - Tested on the Severn Valley Railway and Chilterns One off special from Bridgnorth to Marylebone

So there's been a good few!

Modern locos are fairly common visitors for diesel galas on lines with mainline links. I remember the NVR had a 66 some years ago. I've also had a Voyager on the SVR when they were new (it was my first trip on a Voyager, having just had my first Super Voyager from Leicester to Birmingham).
There are then freight workings. Aswell as some mentioned, the GCR(N) has had modern locos hauling Gypsum trains from Loughorough to East Leake for a long time.

I rode on a Voyager when they were brand spankers on the NYMR, I also went on the 153 shuttle they ran from Pickering to Levisham during a gala.

The Weardale also had a Crapager for filming a virgin advert and they now have coal trains, but not sure about stone trains, down there ( why does all this happen AFTER i move!)

The Wensleydale is used on a regular if infrequent basis for MOD trains becuase it allows easy access to Catterick.

I am sure HST has been down the Weardale and perhaps also the Wensleydale but not sure about NYMR

Also, if the Wensleydale Railway finally mange to connect to Garsdale, would they not consider purchasing/leasing modern stock to run their intended regular service rather than use heritage stock almost daily?

I remember the NVR had a 66 some years ago.

The NVR have had a GBRf 66 for almost all of their diesel galas over the past five or six years - there's another one booked in for the October one this year. To date, it's mainly been the later ones, the Metronet and First Group liveried ones. GBRf often use the NVR for various training exercises, so 66s on freight are also not infrequent.

I wonder if heritage railways could be used to solve the summer strengthening issues, now BR's practice of having spare stock on standby for such work has largely ceased. In the winter, heritage railways shut down or run very reduced services, I wonder if some could be operated by modern traction over the winter, providing a public transport service (very much dependant on whether the line goes anywhere big enough). In the summer, the heritage railway's heritage stock would take over the services allowing the modern traction to be moved off to strengthen summer national rail services. It wouldn't cover all strengthening needs, but it would help wouldn't it?
