The pre-electronic setup at Crewe was priceless.
There was a list of departures on a huge roll, of which about 6 feet at a time was displayed in the window.

I was looking for a picture of the old display at Glasgow Central (where boards were hung in the windows of a building overlooking the concourse, and which lasted into the 1980s), and came across this blog post, which may be of interest.

I don't think so... They were updated to be fed from a PC in the BR days (at about the same time that most staffed stations got TV screens on the platforms as departure boards.

You may well be right and I've got wires crossed with more ancient times!

Coming back to the displays at Manchester it looks like it too may be reverting/converting from the a-z display to those similar to Euston or Leeds. I was there on Thursday and there was a demonstration model on the reverse side of the information point to where the current screens are (sorry wasn't able to get any photo's) and it seems these are in time planned to replace the A- Z departure board.

I noticed this too when I was at Piccadilly yesterday, unfortunately I also wasn't able to get a picture of it. However, they thought they needed to have a sticker below it to state it was for demonstration purposes only.....although it was for a train going to Ramsgate!!!

Yes there were a few which seemed to not make sence, I think they had a few FGW stopping in Piccadilly and a TPE going to Abergavenny. I suppose as a demonstrator it's better to put trains and stations that don't connect with MAN so as not to confuse matters, despite the very clear and noticeable 'Demonstrator' sign in large yellow wording next to it. Inevitably you can't make anything idiot proof because idiots are so ingenious.

Took another picture of the demo display at Manchester Piccadilly tonight as I wandered past. Not sure what the significance of the different colours are? (Probably something dead obvious that hasn't occurred to me yet )

The colours appear just to be 3 different ways of displaying the info. All white, all yellow or alternating yellow and white. Bonbury and Cornforth are interesting stations. :p

I like the 10:12 train which seems to be operated by two different TOCs, one of which not sounding very real anymore, and seems to stop just about everywhere apparently ;)

Bear in mind that people may only glance at it very quickly it may be possible for someone to see P3 and think it is P13 then end up heading towards Manchester Oxford Road rather than towards Stockport or Stalybridge.

Does anyone do that at the minute? I think it looks rather more confusing with the 0 there!
