Not quite a 'new' loss, but B107 KPF (Leyland Tiger/EL2000) was burnt out in a depot fire in 1992 having just been delivered from East Lancs after being rebodied.

A number of nearly-new Darts (53-plate) were submerged along with a V-reg MAN/ALX300, some Volvo B10M/PS saloons and an RML which was stored there. All were repaired, the Darts having been written-off by the insurers and then bought back by Stagecoach who then cleaned them all out thoroughly and refurbished then before dispersing them around the group.

The biggest casualty was the BBC Radio Cumbria multimedia bus. It was garaged at Willowholme and was written off as the floods had destroyed all the electrical equipment inside the vehicle.

There were several V/X reg MANs that were flooded. The only one to escape was 22804 which was overnighting at Penrith at the time. Also, there were some 04 plate darts flooded as well, but as DunsBus has said, these were repaired.

Other victims of the flood were Carlisle's fleet of Dennis Lances, which were scrapped.

If memory services me correctly these were the Plaxton-bodied Lances new to Selkent in 1994 shortly before the company was bought by Stagecoach. These had Hull registrations as the usual practice for new London vehicles at that time was to have them registered by the bodybuilder rather than by London Buses. They actually survived the Carlisle floods - although Stagecoach wrote them all off, they were sold to a dealer who dried them out and cleaned them up before being sold for further use.

Mention of Stagecoach London sadly cannot pass with out a mention of the Trident that was blown apart, with fatalities, in the 7/7 bombings - 17758 (LX03BUF).

My experience of First bus is they run everything to the ground so isn't fit for using afterwards. We still have L, N and P reg buses as normal on majority of services.

Can never stop thinking about that. I was on 17758 on the 86 just five days before the attacks.

On topic, I have encountered a number of DB250s/ALX400s being purposely burnt out at Brixton/Norwood Arriva London garages - all mainly V-plates. Another bus, A Y-plated Caetano was burnt out after an engine fire, Y3xxHMY of Metrobus, and a Crawley - allocated Volvo Caetano Levante National Express coach was also written off after an engine fire. It can still be seen in the now closed depot from the Brighton Mainline next to another Levante - unsure what the fault is with this one but looks complete.

London Central's Optare Spectra SP14 (K314FYG) merits a mention. This was the bus which overturned and fell off a bridge at Crystal Palace while on route 3 in October 1999, fortunately with no human casualties.

SP14 itself was written off as a result of the accident but was transferred north with London Central's remaining Spectras the following year to Go North East, who used it as a spares donor. It was numbered in series with the other Spectras, becoming 3846 with GNE, although obviously it was never physically carried. The hulk of SP14 was still extant at Saltmeadows until fairly recently.

On a similar vein, how about a few 'modern trains that have been scrapped'?!

I can think of the pair of 150/2 sets that both had serious prangs fairly early in their careers, in both cases resulting in one half of the train being scrapped (the remaining vehicles have spent some years since as centre cars in other 150 units).

There is the Grayrigg Pendo of course, the Potters Bar Networker and the Ladbroke Grove Turbo, the 66 down the bank in deepest Scotland and the other one written off by a 225 when that hapless chap parked his Landrover on the track... Any less well known examples of early scrappings?!

I reckon the 70 that was dropped on the dock has to be a pretty good contender for the newest machine written off.

142008 was scrapped following the Winsford collision on 23rd June 1999. Class 87 loco 87027 practically ate the thing!!

Also, 142059 was scrapped after it collided with the buffers at Liverpool Lime Street in October 1991.

More recently, 143613 was scrapped following a fire at Nailsea and Backwell in 2004. 143615 also was scrapped in similar circumstances.

I'm wondering if that New Bus For London that smashed its face on a traffic light last week is going to be economical to repair. It looked pretty mangled. That managed a whole one day of service.

A number of ex Arriva London Mercedes Citaro bendy buses are stored at a depot in Central England. Only around 10 years old but unlikely to find new owners.

The latest in a growing list of Arriva North East fires. That's 3 relatively modern vehicles lost in recent years, after the two Temsas. Then you have the older fire losses with a number gone in recent years. Must be averaging one every 6-9 months

Agreed. Come to North Essex and you will see just that, 25 year old Volvo Olympians still running. Some have massive dents in them, others look brand new, some look dangerously battered. But bloody hell, they just don't give up the ghost! They will not die.

There are (or where until recently) T reg Tridents being used by the Harwich and Clacton Depots, they were so bad that I think most of them have been scraped, singled decker Wright Access ultra lows now run those routes. Yet the ancient Olympians are fine!

Signs of them being replaced now though, lots of new liveried Trident's popping up now, 05 and 02 reg.

Oldest First have in Cornwall running regularly are K reg still running that I am aware of.

Lothian Buses Volvo B9TL/Wright Eclipse Gemini 390, SN11EDX, was gutted by fire at Oxgangs last night (16/12/13) while working service 4. The cause of the fire was vandalism and the police are now seeking a 14-16 year old youth who was seen leaving the bus at Oxgangs at around 2230, shortly before 390 went up in flames. All those on board including the driver escaped safely.

390's future is presently uncertain although stories I've been hearing suggest that it is beyond repair and will probably be written off.
