Model BR Sleeper

[Class 66's]

Hi all.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place.
I found this recently in my Dad's garage- I was wondering what other stock it goes with. He told me it came with a Class 37.

I had a class 37 in a train set. It came with three mk2a passenger coaches. I bought my sleeper coaches separately. It may have been with a 37 in another set?

On the underside of it, does it have the name "Lima" or "Hornby" on it?

I suspect it's a Triang or Triang-Hornby coach.

That's a Triang-Hornby model, which according to the following site was produced in that particular guise for four years between 1968 and 1971. The model was first released in BR maroon livery in 1962.

Between 1970 and 1972 it also appeared as part of "The Night Mail" train set, which also included a BR blue liveried class 37 loco numbered D6830, an operating Royal Mail coach (of a more basic design than that which Hornby have offered in more recent years, though hardly new itself) and a mark 2 first class brake coach. This might well be the set that your Dad had in mind:

I'm not savvy with mark 1 era sleeper formations; it was before my time; but a more prototypical formation would probably include mark 1 or early mark 2 seated coaches. Hornby produced a small selection of models of this type contemporary with the release of this sleeper coach.

Mark 1 sleeper coaches were introduced in 1957 and were withdrawn in the early 1980s. Rail blue / "pearl grey" coach livery was introduced in about 1965. A few services were advertised as "sleeping cars only", but most also had some seating coaches. Formations could have any stock that existed between those dates, including some pre-BR stock, but Mark 1 stock was probably most common until the late 1970s. Formations were often longer than can be displayed on most "home" model railways -- up to 15 or 16 coaches was not unknown.
