They don't.

Junior Drivers are drivers limited to yards/trip working

Mobile Operatives are ground shunters.

The "mobile" aspect comes from driving a van to customer terminals or sidings to do groundstaff duties; operate ground frames, coupling and uncoupling, train preparation and so on. The non-mobile type of groundstaff work is where someone is based in a yard and doesn't normally travel around. So you would be "mobile" dealing with trains in whichever terminals / sidings are covered by a particular depot, rather than working at a fixed location.

Pretty much what Adrian says. You may need to ride with the train / loco occasionally. Depending on where you're based you may have jobs that are 12 hours long at one location dealing with multiple trains. You may have short jobs that involve arriving or departing one train. You may require extra competencies for specific loads exams if you will be dealing with them such as containers or steel / ingots. Again, depending where you will be based you may have to unload aggregate trains via bottom opening doors. Also you will be expected to do T3's sometimes. On more than one turn i do i am expected to take / collect drivers from local station in the van.

Good evening,

I just wanted to know if DB Cargo operatives tend to be recruited internally for train driver roles? I see DB have a few mobile operative roles on their website so was hoping it would be a good place to start in the company, build up some valuable knowledge and move onto a train driver role in the future if it was the right choice? Or does not tend to happen? TIA

It’s definitely the way to go to build up knowledge before driving.

Also, as DB do their own in house psychometrics, it can make the process easier. You’ll know the reps and managers so if you apply you’ll most likely be sent off for psychometrics and then put in the talent pool. Providing you pass of course.
