Mobile apps: Selling a full range of tickets

A few weeks ago, I Tweeted to FGW about how their mobile app (and, to be fair, most others that I've tried - like FCC, EC etc) doesn't offer things like first class supplements (Gold cards) or plusbus tickets.

I was told initially that it did, but then after being told that I was talking about the downloadable app, or indeed, using the mobile skin on the ordinary web site - which is the only option on my phone EVEN IF I try and force the desktop version in the browser, they admitted the app wasn't yet able to offer such ticket options.

I pointed out that it was frustrating as the mobile app lets me (and others) buy tickets on the go, but they said they'd feed back and I left it at that. Clearly nothing happened, and the app still doesn't offer such things.

Today, I tried to buy my now fairly regular (as in once or twice per week) ticket of Hatfield to Tottenham Hale. It's an easy enough ticket to buy from the TVM at the station, or the ticket office. But I'd like Nectar points.

The problem is that the mobile app is nice and simple, which means it doesn't let you do much. Select the time, and if you have a railcard and off it goes.

The route suggested on the app is, as I was intending to travel, HAT to FPK and tube to Tottenham Hale. The ticket costing £7.45 with Gold Card discount, marked 'Via Victoria Line North'. But the app doesn't offer it. It only offers an Any Permitted at £9.25. Going via King's Cross is far slower, and I certainly don't need or want to go via Liverpool Street to have to catch the same train I'd get at Tottenham Hale some 10+ minutes earlier.

So I Tweeted FGW again, attaching images of the app and the ticket. I played a game by calling it a quiz, to see if they could spot the error (not in a rude way) and eventually had to explain what the problem was.

And the answer?

First: "You have to add the relevant railcard to get the ticket. We can't put all railcards on app, there just isn't room. Jess"

When it seemed apparent she was confused about the railcard discount and whether I had a railcard or not, I sent an image of the correct ticket and asked if FGW was in breach of rules on impartial ticket selling by not showing a cheaper ticket for a selected route.

The answer to that:

"We aren't in breach of the rules as we are still offering the tickets elsewhere. Sorry for the issues, will pass on your comments."

I finished off by asking if that was the official company line, whereby the conversation quickly ended. As they invariably do when you say things like that.

So, after my trademark long post, is that correct? Is it okay that a mobile app doesn't show all tickets, supplements and/or add-ons - as long as the tickets are available somewhere else?

Do the people who use the mobile app know there could be cheaper tickets available for the journey they wish to make?

You can see the conversation on Twitter here, but for some reason the conversation seems to split up, which makes it a little hard to read.

PS. Knowing the way ATOC works, we'll probably find that the solution would be to remove the sale of Gold Card 1st Class supplements, axe PlusBus, and ditch the cheaper tickets - thus forcing people to only buy any permitted tickets!

I had a similar problem which I previously posted - reprised below (although for obvious reasons I no longer use red spotted hanky)
It effects all apps, it seems.
Sometimes I'm lucky and one train per day might appear with this fare otherwise I have to use a desktop site.
No other solutions were forthcoming sadly.

What I want to do

Use an iphone ticketing app to Buy the £24 off pk Rtn Beaulieu Road -Tonbridge route Edenb/poleg ticket. (Or I'll even take the Southampton to Tonbridge route Eden/poleg).

The problem

iphone apps eg redspottedhanky / virgin only offers the more expensive 55.70 via London fares (more than twice the price).

The response

Redspottedhanky say not all tickets are available via the app but every so often the ticket appears, at other times it is hidden

The solution?

Any ideas? The full websites sell these but even then sometimes won't - if there are engineering works or some other unknown variables, the ticket won't display.

Anyone know a hidden or clever way of forcing a route on a ticket app?

The problem with the mobile apps is their utter insistence on your selecting one of their itineraries without being able to specify via/avoid.

If they can't implement a via/avoid feature, the obvious option is to remove the obligation to select the exact train you wanted to use - that way they could show every fare, perhaps with an appropriate message to say that it must be used to travel via x or some such. That would bring it more in line with the Mixing Deck, but it still wouldn't be a full range of tickets.

In my case, it does show the shortest route that has the cheaper ticket, but on the right hand side doesn't offer that as a ticket.

On the desktop, you will get all tickets (which might be greyed out depending on what you've selected).

The problem with the mobile app is that it skips certain parts of the process - namely at the start to have some level of control (e.g. direct trains, fastest, via or whatever) and then skips the pre-purchase stage where you can add on things like plusbus or a supplement.

I'm all for keeping things simple, but surely you don't simplify by removing tickets from sale? You have an 'advanced' tab or similar - although even that isn't really the right way to do things as being offered a cheaper ticket with certain restrictions shouldn't be hidden until you go out of your way to see if such a ticket exists.

Use a TVM at a station and it's the first option (as it's the cheapest) and when buying at a ticket office, it's the first and prompts staff to ask if you're going via the underground at Finsbury Park. As it should be.

What phone/browser are you using? I've found different browsers handle the 'forcing the desktop' in different ways - you may want to see if other browsers will force it through. E.g. on iphone, then opera, chrome, firefox, dolphin, puffin all have different quirks to safari in page handling.

e.g. chrome/iphone gets me to the desktop site.

Chrome, Android. Always gives me the mobile version.

It's annoying when you have a tablet with a 1920x1200 pixel display and is more than ample for a normal desktop view.

Mind you, a simplified mobile view is preferable (if designed correctly) as it will load faster on a mobile data connection. I'm saying that as you don't always have a nice fast, low latency, 4G connection when on the go.

Having read your site, I do of course realise I may be teaching you to suck eggs....

Chrome, iphone will automatically go to the mobile site. But then I can set a site-specific option to 'request desktop site' which works for me. When it hasn't for other sites, I've tried a other browsers. For other browsers, it's a browser-wide setting to pretend to be a desktop computer.

I don't have an android to play around in options for you :(

Chrome for Android has an check box 'Request desktop site'. It doesn't load the mobile site, and always goes to the m. mobile site.

But given Chrome had a massive update that came through only this morning (the beta version finally going final) I've just tried again on my tablet and it still loads the mobile site, but now when you select on the site itself to 'desktop view' it DOES change.

I'm pretty certain it didn't do that before. I'll have to try on my phone tomorrow, as perhaps the tablet now identifies itself (screen resolution, DPI etc) properly, as many sites will deliver a desktop version by default on a larger display. I know we did some contract work for Nokia and anything below a certain resolution forced the mobile view on people. That's what Nokia wanted, so that's what they got.

Anyway, it actually appears that the via Victoria Line ticket isn't available there either! Now I'm very confused, as I'm sure it was on the FCC app before it stopped working - and it's the same booking engine.

Trying to use it on the tablet is a bit of a pain though. Small text and a painfully long time to update things, just like on my real desktop. Having to use the desktop view on a mobile would be painful and not a comfortable workaround.

I always thought the reason request desktop site doesn't work is because that is telling the Web Site to bring back the current page in a desktop format. As the TOCs insist on having a separate mobile site, rather than designing one site that changes according to the browser and device you are using, it doesn't work. I assumed the TOC was directing you to the mobile site before your browser could request the desktop version. An M. Page can even be loaded into a desktop browser and it won't bring back a desktop version of the page.

You'd struggle to do that with a properly designed modern Web Site where it covers all or as many device types as possible, as I don't know of any desktop browsers that have a request mobile site option.

The coding often doesn't work like that. Certainly with FGW it's checking what device you are using and directing you to the 'appropriate' site. It's fine if you get your device to lie about what it is :)

Hi Jon,

I might have fixed this, but I won't know for sure until our booking engine does its overnight update.

I will give it a check when overnight update is complete and will provide an update here.

If it doesn't solve the problem, I will do some further digging.
