Not sure if this has been mentioned (apologies if it has!) but, whilst on a southbound EMR IC service today, I saw that road traffic is finally using Station Rd, Great Glen (SPC3-10). The traffic lights have still got orange bags over the top, however.

Does the A6006 work indicate that finance is now freed and work is to start on electrification North of Leicester?

Last I saw (I will try and post a link later if I can find it) the project was on time and on budget.
It was a local MP moaning about a bridge closure and claiming that the project was on time and on budget, to justify some unneeded expenditure to keep the road open. There's a link upthread somewhere but I can't find it.

But unless we know what the timescales and the budget are, then claims that the project is on time and on budget are pretty uninformative.

The A6006 work is described as being "urgent repair work", so I would imagine it to be coming out of a maintenance budget and not necessarily from funds released for electrification.

The bridge has been open for a number of months now. When it reopened there were temporary roadwork style traffic lights provided. from what you say it sounds like the permanent signals aren’t yet in service. This bridge and a nearby one are a blot on the countryside with their brutalist concrete structures.

The actual quote in #7830 said:

"The wall is in urgent need of repair and this work needs to be carried out before any further work on the bridge for the upcoming electrification of the Midland Mainline."

That's what made me wonder, (my italics).

If it is, MMLE will have to survive next year's Spending Review for it to be an effective yes.

The A6006 is carried by a different bridge (Kirk Hill) on the other side of Sutton Bonington; Marle Pit Hill (where the repairs will happen) is ~1.25 miles NNW thereof. Granted, the parish quote doesn't make that distinction explicit.

Interesting. It's still described on one.network as an ongoing closure and the finish date has periodically gone out 4 weeks at a time; perhaps whoever's uploading the information forgot to reclassify the works.

It is definitely open.

I suspect now that the "ongoing closure" will remain until such time as all works are complete, as road closures will be required to commission the lights.

This is probably Neil O'Brien talking about the B582 Blaby Road (where South Wigston station used to be).
He was campaigning to lower the track bed rather than bridge replacement.
In fact, there's an update there that I don't recall seeing on this forum - they will indeed lower the track bed rather than replace the bridge.

https://www.neilobrien.org.uk/news/fantastic-news-spion-kop-bridge-wigston-stay-open.

Note that the works are still planned for next summer and due to location is part of Wigston-Syston phase, not Syston-Trent/Sheet Stores.
It will be quite a reversal of fortune to cancel it.

MMLE was among the topics covered in a recent Transport Committee session. I've included a few paragraphs from the transcript.

11 December 2024 - Rail services and infrastructure - Oral evidence

Q54 Catherine Atkinson (Derby North MP): You mentioned the midland main line. While there is still design work going on, I understood that the practical electrification work for the stage it was at has now completed, and the end of the next tendering process will not be until September next year. Has there been any work in looking at the risks to the supply chain and to skills, and making sure that we keep them in this country rather than their being attracted to other countries?

Alex Hynes (Director General, Rail Services (DfT)): We are electrifying the midland main line between St Pancras, which was already electrified, and Wigston in Leicestershire. We are introducing the brand-new electric hybrid trains next year, which will be great for passengers. Network Rail and the Department are talking to the supply chain about the next potential phases of midland main line electrification—Derby, Nottingham and Sheffield. Any decision around that will come out of the spending review. Network Rail is talking to the supply chain, particularly around prices and tendering strategy, for further phases of electrification if we have the money to do so.
Confirmation, if it were needed, that funding for electrification beyond Wigston (other than the limited tasks already done) is still not committed at present. Where the A6006 bridge works are concerned May 2025 isn't written in stone.

Q55 CA: The practical work is finished at the moment. The only work is design work. When we now face such a huge delay until the end of the tendering process, what will happen to those companies and those skills?

AH: We are electrifying railways in the UK. We are electrifying the trans-Pennine route upgrade, for example.

Q56 CA: Is that where they are going? They have gone from midland to trans-Pennine.

AH: I am not familiar with the detail. I will need to talk to Network Rail about that. What tends to happen with the electrification market is that they tend not to be tied to a geographic area; they tend to move round the country depending on where the work is. That highlights the need for a smooth rolling programme of efficient electrification because it enables the supply chain to invest in the plant and the equipment and skills that you need to sustain a rolling programme. Both on electrification and on rolling stock, one of our intentions is to have a more joined-up strategy, which has been difficult in the fragmented railway that we currently have.

CA: I would be hugely grateful for a follow-up answer just in terms of that detail.

In very clear unspoken other words full electrification into Sheffield will not be completed before 2035. (At this rate, if ever.)

Excellent questioning but a poor answer.

Network Rail have applied for traffic management at two bridges that look consistent with Syston-Trent electrification works.

A46 North of Syston 8th March - 26th April
Kegworth Road at Ratcliffe on Soar - 1st March - 18th April

Both bridges have quite low parapets in their most recent Google Streetview imagery.

So where's the budget coming from? I thought approval for Syston-Trent was awaiting the spending review and looking dicey?

This is a good question.

Based on my experience of other projects outside rail, but within similar types of public infrastructure, budget approvals will come in stages as it moves through each design/delivery stage

So this means budget has been unlocked for design, consenting, surveying etc. People are out sticking pegs in the cess to mark pile locations, and presumably also to carry out these small-scale civils and preparatory works. i.e. the committed spend is probably already in the tens of millions.

What I guess has not been approved, and therefore guess will wait for the spending review, is the authority to commit to hundreds of millions of pounds of contracts that mean you are contractually committed to delivering the scheme and have gone past the point of no return.

Further to previous posts. This was taken in Leicester station from a very grubby northbound EMR 222. It has a yellow marker with the same markings. Also there are quite a number of stick markers south of Knighton Tunnel.

Distance from St Pancras in km and metres? If so, do they belong to the electrification teams as civil use imperial (miles & chains)?

Yes to the distance from St Pancras, it was discussed last month when first noticed. Post #7743 reads that it’s exactly how the electrification masts are identified.

Presumably the A46 bridge at Syston is the bridge close to the station, I am sure the main A46 by-pass dual carriageway bridge should be OK.

The original A46 is an under bridge so presumably would not need much work.

The old A607 bridge at the station should be ok, I am sure they have done work on it already. Likewise, the bridges towards Thurmaston (such as Barkby Road) had new sides around the time of the aborted electrification.

I do agree that the A46 bridge (as it has been all of my lifetime) would seem like it did not need new parapets. However, the description of closing lanes (rather than the road) suggests that it is indeed the dual carriageway bridge being discussed.

I must pay closer attention in future!

It comes out at 99 miles 5.1 chains, which—given the location of the 99 milepost very slightly north of the south end of the platforms—looks as if it could be the mid-point of the station platforms. That was the traditional Railway Clearing House measuring point for a station. Is that still the case?

If you mean the A46 dual carriageway bridge, then to my eye the parapets look like they will need raising for electrification.
I do mean the A46 dual carriageway and not any historic ex-A46.

The tell is that one.network shows which organisation has applied for traffic management, and this time it's Network Rail. If it were almost any other kind of work on this bridge it would be National Highways.

Obviously it could get postponed etc

Yes, that is the only dual-carriageway bridge over the MML between Leicester and Trent (I think the A453 is still single where it crosses the MML, but it is a long time since I was up there). The A52 is dual-carriageway over Toton, but that is north of Trent.

I'll take a look when I am up that way next week, but it will mean a bit of traffic during next year's works, even if one lane stays open.

From Google Streetview, there seems to be plenty of space to work on the parapet without impinging too much on the carriageway.

As far as I am aware, All departments use the same survey points.
When the Leeds NW Electrification was done. A survey was carried out and 10m Markings marked on the rails. OHL, Signalling, PW and Civils all used these markings as a common baseline. Note was made, though of all old mileage detail to enable tie in of records.

Clearly a long time. The A453 has been dual carriageway from the M1 to the A52 for about a decade now.
The original bridge is still in use for one carriageway, and this is likely to be the one needing attention. A new one was added alongside when it was dualled. That one is noticeably higher, presumably to meet the latest clearance standards for new bridges, and I would expect it to have compliant parapets. If they are raising the parapets on the older bridge then it means the bridge itself doesn't need replacing.

I read that as the bridge on Kegworth Road, in Ratcliffe, which is much older than either bridge on the A453 (Remembrance Way) and will need raised parapets, and could well need bridge lifting or track lowering.
