The compromise is Leicester North - Syston and leave the Leicester bit until later.
Should EMR's order of Class 810s quickly prove to provide insufficient capacity, not wiring Leicester removes the ability to run relief EMUs from St Pancras to Leicester and removing one of the core benefits of electrification of massively increasing the number of trains capable of operating on any given route.

Part of me also wonders whether the scope of this project is flawed - It seems to be a project that focuses only on converting services originating at St Pancras to electric traction. Had the project also considered infill routes such as Leicester / Sheet Stores Jn / Derby to Birmingham and Lichfield Trent Valley then perhaps a more concerted effort would be made to wire the route properly rather than having discontinuous electrification if you work on the assumption that services using infill electrification will be worked by traditional EMUs without any form of independent power.

My worry is that Leicester North to Syston and maybe Sheet Stores Jn gets done whilst Leicester station faces the same fate as the 'postponed' electrification that was supposed to be done as part of GWEP. Then there's the pressing matter for the industry as a whole that in order to encourage more electrification, Network Rail needs to prove that it can electrify problem areas such as Leicester station at a reasonable cost rather than adopting discontinuous electrification.

I was furious at the time with Grayling but with hindsight it was a good (accidental) decision.
double edge sword though saves the day today that new trains can run but allows them to kick the electrification can down the road almost indefinitely now

Those routes are really separate to this scheme I wouold say.

A more useful comparision would be current Leicester to Grimsby / Cleethorpes and Crewe to Newark Castle / Lincoln and Matlock to Nottingham service groups which could use these wires between Leicester and Nottingham and between Derby and Nottingham as well as the existing wires between Stoke and Crewe.

Passing through Kettering today in both directions, I noticed a "Lower Pantograph" sign, mounted on the bridge at Kettering South Jct in the Up direction. There is a corresponding "Raise Pantograph" sign in the Down direction. I'm not sure of the reasons for these as I was under the impression that the 810s were to run on ac from Wigston to Bedford until OLE125 work is completed. This looks like Wigston to Kettering ac running. Hardly seems worth it!

Maybe that was left over from before the recent works. Seems a bit early to change modes with the current electrification.

The signs are the wrong way round if that is the case then! (Down is towards Leicested, Up towards London in this location).
I'm a bit surprised (assuming kneedown has got the directions right) as I'd have thought the OLE from Bedford to Kettering would have been 125mph ready.

It is. Still 100 max for 360s between Wellingborough and Kettering as they can’t use the HST differentials.

These are new signs, only had the covers removed when the power was turned on last Sunm

Can confirm the directions are correct.

Mentioned it to my Driver Manager today. He's flummoxed as well, but will do some digging.
Watch this space.

Unless it’s for trains coming on/off Manton. Is there some reason why couldn’t raise their pans nearer to Corby?

S Yorks, usually
Prediction: it goes straight to Leicester without the extra miles to Bedford shown in the RTT entry
edit: so much for that, just passed Wigston N Jn heading south (looking at traksy)

Remind me not to take betting tips from this user! RTT suggesting it's already South of Kettering.

Looks like it reversed at Wellingborough instead of Bedford and then headed back north, causing some of the RTT times to be a bit confused.

I doubt it. The signs are on either side of the fast lines just to the north of the junction (Bridge no55 I think) and therefore not applicable for trains coming from Manton.
To clarify, the signs are "Pan Down" for Southbound trains, and "Pan Up" for northbound trains.
